A friend lent me the trade paperback of the first volume of Warren Ellis' "nextwave: agents of H.A.T.E.", and I almost immediately went out and bought the second volume.
It's one of the funniest comics I've read in a long time.
Ellis took a handful of lesser-known characters from the Marvel Universe (and one who seems to be an amalgam of every lesser-known character whose moniker was "Captain [blank]") and then threw them up against a government agency being run by a terrorist organization and their cronies, including a giant lizard in purple underpants, genetically engineered plant-androids related to broccoli, and an otherworldly entity with a thing for goth chicks.
One of the heroes is introduced with the narrative "...has mutant powers to blow things up and steal all your stuff."
If your sense of humor is sufficiently twisted to find mirth at the good guys kicking the bad guys when they're down and Captain America beating up a superhero for having a vulgar pseudonym, please pick it up- it's the best chance that Ellis and Marvel will actually return to give this off-beat title their attention.

Eh. People kept recommending this to me saying the humor was just -so- extremely witty and twisted. Upon reading it, I found it to be slightly more literate version of the exact same jokes Marvel used to make all the time in comics like Not Brand EEYECH and What Th-?, a premise Ellis made even thinner as the series went on.

I've never found Warren Ellis all that interesting or original, honestly. It's cute that he wants to be Alan Moore, though.
