I'm not going to review it yet, I will later once I get further into the game, but for now a question: If I am one of the factions how to I travel to an allies factions capitol?

The little tip tells me to find the Flight Master in the war camps.

I'm having fun with it so far. It's not really any different from any other MMO, but it must be the right game at the right time because I'm having a blast. I also love the public quests. I like getting to wander in, kill stuff for a bit, and wander back out when I'm bored guilt free and earning myself spiffy rewards. It was a really brilliant idea.

How does it compare to DAoC? I have been thinking of re-subscribing for something to do with my brothers once a week for an hour or so.

After Trials of Atlantis DAoC turned into a pure grind game and I had to give it up. I recently heard they have classic servers up without the uber gear from Trials of Atlantis.

I really enjoyed the Realm battles. My bro and I would play every other Saturday and have a blast.

Mythic makes Warhammer Online. Is it friendly to casual gamers who like realm battles? I tried to get my brother to play Guild Wars, as there is no monthly fee and you can jump in for faction battles or team battles very easily. He didn't like it tho--moved too fast.

Comparisons anyone?

So far, the flight master only gives me the option to fly to one of the (presumed) 3 major cities. On my Order character, it allows me to go to the Empire City (Altdorf). To select it, you have to click the "Empire vs Chaos" option on the right hand side of the Flight Master map. On my Destruction Character, only the Chaos city is available. I don't know if this holds true for every server though. Other factions' cities might be available on other servers.

I'm not sure what's up with the other cities yet, as I'm only only lvls 12-14 between my 2 characters. For all I know, they might not even be functioning. Maybe they have to be won over first. Perhaps they are just contested and the Flight Masters don't show up in them until they are firmly under control.

It kinda makes sense that only these cities are available though, as in the opening cinematic, it's the human city being fought over, and the Chaos lead the attacking force. This leads me to believe that they are the center players in the "Story" of this game.

I have been doing some reading to compare War to DAoC. I keep hearing about PvE, PvP, and Realm fighting. I always thought they were the same. What is the difference between PvE, PvP, and RvR?

Edit: Nevermind. I was reading PvE as "Player versus Everyone." It is "Player versus Environment." PvP and RvR are essentially the same thing.

Not quite, PvP is more of a focus on the 1 on 1 kind of fighting while RvR tries to emphasize the public questing system, cooperative play in the grand scheme of things, and fighting in epic battles.

So how does WAR compete with Camelot?

Blayne, How are your studies going? Seems to me all you do is play videogames and terrorize hatrack.

Lanfear, believe it or not, it's actually quite possible to post on a forum, play video games, and excel at your job/school/etc.

This may come as a shock to you, but I'd wager quite a few members of this very board do just that.

I didn't say it wasn't possible. Not even a little bit.

He's just talked about two different MMO's and a couple of newish FPS's. My experience is that playing one MMO is usually the equivalent of a full-time job, especially when we realize that one of them is EVE.

I also know that Blayne just started uni, and that he's taking some tough programming esque classes.

I was just curious as to how he was managing all of that.

In the past I definitely played WoW like a full time job, and today I still play it quite significantly, but nowhere near the amount I used to. While Blayne has indeed said he plays Eve Online as recently as over a month ago, usually when somebody stops playing a game they don't announce it. I wouldn't be surprised if Blayne has both accounts still active but only plays one consistently.

Beyond that say Blayne is actually neglecting his studies for the sake of the entertainment video games provide, a problem MANY men have. It has been my experience that people on a forum are going to have little effect on whether the person changes that or not. More likely it's the people that person actually cares about who will affect the most change.

But hey if it's a problem feel free to try and help him. I can't say I know it's a problem Blayne is having however.

I'm currently a university student working, and wishing I had more time to game, so perhaps my comments were based in more jealousy than I'd care to admit. But I really would be interested to see how people try to juggle college/work/friends/gaming.

Because it is pretty rough.

Any school problems I have are a result of procrastination and time schedualing problems not because of any addictions I may or may not have.

EVE is also very "casual friendly" in that your character advancement takes place in real-time regardless of whether you play or not, so Blayne could simply have set a "long skill" that will take a month to train and let it go. Technically he's "still playing" since his character's advancing, even if he's not actually in the game doing "pew pew" or whatever ;-)

Here is my quick review of Warhammer.

Intro:

My three favorite games are CIV IV, Dark Age of Camelot, and Guild Wars. I can't really play CIV IV because I get too caught up in it and waste hours on end.

Camelot was fun. I loved the ambience and the realm vs realm. I am not a hard core gamer, but I didn't feel a need to be in DAoC. I could play with my brother for a couple hours every so often and just chat and enjoy myself. RvR was a blast. The dungeons were a good place to hang out.

I miss my Friar. [Cry] I ultimately stopped playing because of other priorities. With the expansion Trials of Atlantis the game turned into a grind game for RvR. Before ToA it was balanced, but then there were just too many powerful artifacts. The grinders had a HUGE advantage and the game was no longer fun for casual people like me.

How casual was I? It took about 2 years to get to level 25.

I lost my account. I don't remember my old email, log in, or security word. I recently downloaded the trial for old times sake and realized how much I missed it.

I noticed that they have classic servers up without the ToA expansion. [Big Grin] I quickly made my favorite character (Friar) and had a blast for a couple hours.

There weren't that many people online. The world felt empty. I missed my brother who hadn't downloaded it yet and the world was dead. There were no enemies in the lower level RVR areas. [Frown]

During this time I heard about Warmhammer being referenced as DAoC 2.

Guild Wars has been my most consistent game of choice. It is quick and dirty. 20 minutes of game time every once in a while is plenty. It has great faction battles and arena battles. It focuses on tactical use of skills rather then items. It is probably the best balanced game I have ever played and requires no monthly fee or serious time investment.

It is NOT a grinding game. I love faction RvR battles that are in Guild Wars Factions.

***

Warhammer:

It seems Warhammer is a blend of DAoC (made by the same people and referenced by fans as DAoC 2) and Guild Wars.

Leveling seems easy. Money has not been an issue yet. When you start the game you can immediately do RVR battles that are VERY similar to GW Factions. It almost seems like a rip of Guild Wars.

IE: a factions battle takes about 10 minutes. The first team to get 500 points wins. You might have 16 v 16 people. You hold rally points that give you bonuses. Warmhammer is almost identicle, down to the color of the rally points, the time per battle, and the 500 points needed to win. You get points per kill and for holding rally points.

The skill progression seems to be like DAoC, but the use seems to be like Guild Wars. I am level 6 after only 2 hours of play.

It seems fun, fast, and casual friendly. It is a combination of my two favorite games, tho nothing will match DAoC's ambience in my opinion.

Warhammer has lots of action--normal quests, public quests (uber fun), and just plain old fighting against other players from the opposing realm.

Where WoW is the king of PvE, Mythic (DAoC and not Warhammer) is the king of RvR. PvE by it's nature is a grinding experience. Warhammer has lots of potential.

I just wish it did not have a monthly fee and they never ruin it like they did DAoC with ToA. If my brother gets on I will keep playing.
