Hi Folks.

I thought and Kwea seconded ( [Big Grin] ) that we should have a presidential election/debates VIDEO ONLY linkserve for the next few months.

Please post relevant videos with a description of content, and I will do my best to organize. Please post videos only- the debate and links to articles and other material should probably stay with the current discussion in the other thread. Let me know if that is not equitable.

Now let's get started:

Sarah Palin and Charlie Gibson: The "Complete" Interview from ABC.com

I can't vouch for this being all the content of the interviews, but it is most substantial than what can be found in a google search. I am quite annoyed at ABC.com for not prominently featuring their video content online- the videos are linked at the top right of some articles.

The best I can do is this link to a 9:36 segment on the ABC website:

According to my research, the interview will be doled out in mall piece until there is a full 60 minute special on 20/20.

I really wish they could just set a date and air the GD interview so we can see it.

What I'm interested in is how the whole thing gets edited for the final broadcast due to criticism of the interview segments.

For example, it's very clear from the full context of the "God's Plan" quote that what she meant was very much in line with what Lincoln said--it doesn't seem like as much of a stretch as it does in the interview as it stands. I'm curious to see whether they show more of the quote now, or whether they run with what we've already seen.

I agree that the initial quotes are taken out of context. I think people have a right to be concerned, particularly after Bush's comments the past few years, but come on.....there are enough legit issues to raise without chopping her comments up to change the context of what she was saying.

Some of her comments raise red flags to me, but that one was a lot more palatable once I heard the full quote.

I still don't know why God cares about a pipeline though, and that quote IS in context. [Smile]

Okay, here's the complete transcript. The parts in bold were not aired.

quote:
GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.

That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie. And I do believe, though, that this war against extreme Islamic terrorists is the right thing. It’s an unfortunate thing, because war is hell and I hate war, and, Charlie, today is the day that I send my first born, my son, my teenage son overseas with his Stryker brigade, 4,000 other wonderful American men and women, to fight for our country, for democracy, for our freedoms.

Charlie, those are freedoms that too many of us just take for granted. I hate war and I want to see war ended. We end war when we see victory, and we do see victory in sight in Iraq.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words,
but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world and that plan for this world is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country to be able to live and be protected with inalienable rights that I believe are God-given, Charlie, and I believe that those are the rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

That, in my world view, is a grand — the grand plan.

Even in the unedited version, where Gibson acknowledges that the Lincoln point is valid, it looks like she's reaching here with the Lincoln comparison when you look at what Charlie says she said. But here's the context of that sentance in the prayer:

"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [US soldiers] out on a task that is from God."

And the quote about God's Plan:

"That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

It's clear from the context that the statements actually were right in line with Lincoln's, and were not the bold, presumptuous statements of knowing God's will that Gibson made them out to be.

And yet Palin presumes to know God's will when it comes to pipelines.

quote:
I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that. "

I believe God has ALWAYS been really into micromanaging.

Now regarding that pipeline, I remember rolling my eyes when I read Palin's quote regarding God's interest in that pipeline. But I do believe there are projects, some big some small, that God has an active hand in bringing to pass. I don't presume to know what all those projects are or aren't, but I believe they exist.

I also believe that God has been into micro, macro, and most other kinds of managing.

I am worried when someone believes that their project has attracted some special management from God.

I also worry about those who claim that God is working for the same goals as they are, for that puts any possible disagreement in the realms of blasphemy.

I would hate to see someone burned at the stake over an oil pipeline.
