...I guess 78+ years of gag-a-day strips later, they both just decided to skip the joke.

I mean, the strip usually -pretends- there's a gag, somewhere. Here, the characters both state a few observations, then don't even quip. It's blatantly taunting the reader with it's innate unfunnyness!

I'm so glad this strip continues to cling, leech-like, to the comics page. [Razz]

Well, there might be a kind of a joke in the idea that the boss doesn't have to even give an excuse, or that the boss is flattered that his excuses are legendary... I mean, I can see how it is an attempt at humor.

It's not funny, granted.

Agreed Puffy. And then there are the jokes that are so antiquated. I get annoyed at Blondie's hand-on-heart, scandalized, shocked expression that seems to show up in nearly every strip. You'd think the woman would have died of a heart attack by now...
