I've been at the Navy's Nuclear Power "A" School for more than a month. We got to take leave and go home for Christmas. I brought all of my OSC books back, and a few others that I'll probably read later.
I purchased Ender in Exile last week. My roommate saw that sitting on my bed table and also noticed all of my Card books. "You like to read Orson Scott card, huh?" He said. I assumed that he was just making small talk and probably didn't know who OSC is, like most people who have seen my collection. "Yeah, he's my favorite author." I replied. I was shocked when he said (I paraphrase) "Ender's Game is one of my favorite books."
Well, that made my day! "Ender's Game is my favorite book, too." I said. "I have all of the Ender books, and I'm trying to get all of Card's books." He went on to tell me that he hadn't finished the Shadow series yet, and he asked about what happened in some of the other books. I managed to answer him without spoiling too much. I am lending him the rest of the Shadow books (that's no problem, I'll know where they are ) to finish.
Of all the places to find a fellow OSC fan, it's here. It's seredipity, I tells ya'!
BTW, EiE is great. The series seems fulfilled now that we get to see Ender grow up.

One girl had it in her favorite book on her facebook info - it made for really easy conversation and she is a totally awesome person.

Yeah, me too, so long as it isn't super creeper-ific. It makes sense, I put stuff up presumably so others have access to it, and if someone is telling me about something they saw on my page it must mean they hold me in high enough regard(or disdain) to be looking at my page to begin with.

Oh, but on topic, someone I met and became friends with last semester I eventually found out she's a big fan of the Ender series and has read all of them at least once(many more than once), and she's starting the shadow series. Then learned that she likes tons of other good books. Huzzah for reading!

We are the nerds of the Navy, but the ratio of nerds to the general population isn't as high I thought it would be. In my time here, I have noticed that most of us have very wide interests.
I wouldn't be surprised to meet more Card fans though.
Tante, where I'm from, sci-fi isn't high on the interest list. That's why I'm shocked. I am usually surprised when I meet people who share my interests, because it rarely happens.

In the English class I started last week, we had to say in front of the class what the last book was that we read that we liked, and a kid in the back said "Ender's Game." I meant to hunt him down after class and interrogate him, but I never got the chance. I'll have to do that this week.
It's ALWAYS awesome to find someone like a room mate or classmate or friend who you didn't know shared an interest with you actually does. It's all about building bridges of common interests, and spreading the sci-fi gospel of course. Posts: 21898 | Registered: Nov 2004
