I have faded memories of Follow That Bird, mainly of the performances by Jim Henson, Carol Spinney, and the other classic Muppeteers.

I hadn't paid attention to the anniversary release...until I saw the cover art.

Elmo has a prominent place on the front and back cover. Elmo.

Elmo...who was still "unnamed small red monster" back when the film was released. Elmo, who had no speaking part in the film.

This annoys me for two reasons:

  • The only people who will care about a "25th anniversary release" of Follow That Bird are old school Sesame Street fans, who tend to be lukewarm towards Elmo's modern prominence.
  • The audience that does like Elmo (three-year olds and diehard Kevin Clash fans)...won't be happy when they realize he's not actually in the darn thing.

Wasn't this Big Bird's starring vehicle? The film that taught us it's okay for a six year old child to jump from a speeding truck if he's 8 feet tall? [Wink]

Yes.

On the various Muppet fan forums, it turns out all the Muppeteers have their own little sub-fandoms.

Even the one who voices Elmo.

Dude. Just be glad they didn't CGI Elmo into the the movie. Now that would be cause for going vigilante. In my book, anyway.

Don't say that too loudly until we know that the rerelease has gone gold.
