Has anyone here read any of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series? If so, what did you think of them? If not, go read them and then answer. Personally, it's my new favorite book series.

I've read the first three. Very entertaining YA books. I enjoy the way so many classic stories are tied in to modern life. Fun stories.

I've read the first one and the second one. Though I read book two before one. I love the books because I'm a big fan of mythology. If you want, I can point you to a couple of books that have Norse and Greek mythical characters.

The latest book in the series greatly annoyed me. During a portion that could have been a great exploration of taking personal responsibility and using one's moral agency, we instead got nonsensical New Age piffle. I almost threw the book away in disgust.
Still, the rest was pretty good.

I'm in book three. This series COULD be really fantastic, but the author spends so much time trying to make the dialogue sound "cool" to 12 year olds. It gets particularly bad during the many first person asides about Percy's likes, dislikes, or exclamations. Or perhaps when he comes up with "cool" remarks that he doesn't say out loud. And the topical bits, like name-dropping bands, is particularly irksome.
But the adventure is there, and the characters are likeable. I'm far more entertained than I was with Harry Potter, which I found a little plodding and self-important at times.
I am "reading" the audio books, however. And the reader, Jesse Bernstein, is absolutely the worst audiobook reader in existance. If I ever meet him in person, I might just spit.

I've read them, and enjoyed them as light fluffy books. I agree with Herblay's critiques - the things that annoyed him annoyed me too.
I think it's a wonderful concept that could have been handled better. Still, loads better than, say, Eragon or Twilight.

Patrick Adkins wrote a Titans trilogy. Lord of the Crooked Paths, Master of the Fearful Depths, and Sons of the Titans. I haven't read it yet, but it looks interesting.

I'm currently reading the first book in the series. I'm having a hard time with the way it's written, but I'm enjoying the story thus far.
So far, the way he brings the mythological beings into the real world have been a bit of a stretch of the imagination sometimes. And each battle doesn't really seem to serve much purpose aside from, "Hey, look what Percy can do!"

It gets better when he stops trying so hard to force in the "Potter pattern" and just explores the cool, weird aspects of Greek myths in a modern setting. For instance, Percy has a natural affinity for (and the affection of) horses, because his father created them.
Still, some other stuff annoyed me. The eventual resolution of the Grover/Pan sub-plot...wasn't very good.

Ironically, I believe Christopher Columbus has been tapped to do the first film in this series as well. . .

I recently finished the final book, and I liked them all. They weren't perfect, but I wasn't annoyed or frustrated by the things others have mentioned. I found them very entertaining and well paced with fun characters.

I really enjoyed all the books as did my brother. He read as fast as he did the Ender's series but then he's always been more greek mythology then Sci Fi.
