Two rush-hour subway trains have collided in Washington DC, killing at least two people, according to reports.

Washington transport authorities said "massive injuries" had been reported.

"Metro reports that two trains collided and one train is on top of the other train. Metro reports massive injuries at this time," it said in a statement.

At least four confirmed dead now. [Frown]

Most of the Jatraqueros I know in the DC area are unlikely to have been on trains in that area (near the DC-MD line), so they're probably fine. But I bet they're all having a hard time getting home, so it may be a while before they can check in.

I don't know of anyone likely to be on that train, thank goodness, but it sounds like a pretty horrible thing. And, as petty as this sounds, I also feel bad for all the commuters today - this sort of snarlup will affect everyone on the metro this evening, which is a good 350,000 people. Yes, it's nothing so bad as all the people who are injured or dead from this crash, but it's nothing to sniff at either.

I've been in the aftermath of train accidents in Chicago, and a pedestrian incident can completely halt all traffic on that line for 3 hours or more while things get cleaned up. I'm sure it will take significantly longer to move two disabled trains and make arrangements for everyone who was on those two pieces of hardware. Expect delays tomorrow as train crews get caught up from their altered schedules tonight (like pilots, they are allowed to work only a certain number of hours) and potentially through the week as well, as rails are repaired.

I'm fine. Still waiting to hear from a friend, who I know rides that section of the line many evenings (but I think not Mondays, so not -too- worried).

[eta: She's fine. Good.]

I don't live in DC anymore, but most of my friends and family do. As far as I know, they're all ok. I've spent so much time on the Metro, it's scary to think of one train on top of another.

I'm fine, and so is everyone I know.

I will also be avoiding the cars on the extreme ends of trains for a while.
