Is anyone else using Geni.com? I'm totally addicted. I'm finding relatives that I never had any way of contacting before. I just got in touch with a second cousin in California who's a sportscaster. And Rahm Emanuel's uncle, who confirmed that Rahm is my third cousin (my father's mother's father Isadore was the one who brought his brother Morris over to the US, and Morris is Rahm's mother's father's father).

I found out that my great aunt was third cousins with a great rabbi called the Chazon Ish. Of course, it's not a blood relationship, since she was married to my grandfather's brother. But it's still a kind of brush with greatness. More so than Rahm, the way I look at it.

I keep finding new connections, and there are relatives of relatives of relatives on Geni.com who have just a single person in common with me, but we can tell by their family connections that they're the same person, so we merge trees and it just keeps going.

The sad part is that we run into an awful lot of dead ends once we get back into Europe and the former Soviet Union. I don't know if we'll ever break through that.

I know that some (most?) LDS folks are heavily into genealogy. Do you use this site, or just the FamilySearch.com one?

I haven't been doing family history/genealogy much lately. We've moved twice in the last year and a half, I separated from my husband and started college full time. It's one of many things that have been put on the back burner.

I think there have been changes at FamilySearch.org since I used it on a semi-frequent basis. Other sites I've used were Rootsweb.com, FamilyTreeMaker.com (for downloaded forms, for example), and CyndisList.com. There was another site - genforum.genealogy.com where I was able to contact my mom's cousin. His parents divorced and his dad (my mom's uncle) remarried, and this side of the family lost contact decades ago.

On the off chance, I tried logging into geni.com and discovered that, yes, I had already registered. Another case of starting something and forgetting to finish it. I'll have to check it out in more detail.

My family's been using it for the past couple of years. I haven't done much with it, but I'm glad it's there, and it's nice to have as a reference. [Smile]
