The description I heard of how the matrix was created involved the creation of sentient robots, and their enslavement, which led to a rebellion.

I always thought it made more sense if humans had essentially enslaved themselves, by connecting their brains to virtual reality devices and then losing their ability to distinguish between reality and virtual reality. The rebellion only occurred when they realized that the machines had started to use this to their advantage and were actively manipulating humans to stay in their pods and continue producing electricity for the machines (yeah, I have a problem with that, too)

Anyway, I thought this article is interesting.

If somebody enslaves me I'll just overthrow them and then vanish behind the Perseus Veil.
