Last week I got to talk to Gareth David-Lloyd, who plays Ianto Jones on "Torchwood." Tomorrow I'll be interviewing Julie Gardner, the producer who's been shepherding the new burst of UK science fiction with the return of Doctor Who, the spinoffs "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Chronicles," and several other groundbreaking series.

Mostly I'll be asking about the new "Torchwood" series coming this month, "Torchwood: Children of the Earth," but I can prolly sneak in some others. Won't be a long interview, though.

Any suggestions?

Can you ask her if we might get more than 5 eps of Torchwood the following season? And more than 4 Doctor Who specials?

She's moving to the US though, right? She's not going to be involved with Dr. Who and Torchwood any more.

Her move is definitely one of the things I'm curious about. Will the rumored American Who happen? Will she still be involved in any way with the show?

Lisa, I understand that the 2010 Doctor Who will be back to a series format, with a new showrunner (Stephen Moffat) and new Doctor.

I thought Eureka was the American Doctor Who.

Will this Torchwood series (Children of Earth) be available anywhere besides BBC One and BBC-America? I have a limited cable company and BBC-America isn't offered.

Does Dr. Who have to renew his medical license when he regenerates?

His name isn't Doctor Who, thats just the title of the show, his name is secret people just call him by "The Doctor"

Also hes not a medical doctor but more of an engineer but usually he says "Doctor of everything".

Ask if there is any chance of a spin-off starring David Tennant and Billie Piper.

PLEASE GOD NO. The very thought makes my skin crawl off my bones and under the desk. Spinoff? Sure. Another, American show at the quality of Doctor Who? Very good. P'raps she can turn my Hiatus pilot into a show *shifty eyes* (It's all your fault, Chris Bridges).

I didn't know about Children of the Earth. The rather "been there done that" title is a bit worrisome but it sounds interesting and watchable. Chris, do have a link to your interview with Gareth David-Lloyd?

Given she's leaving, I too would be interested in finding out what's next for her, since I suspect there's something already clearly set out.

Blayne: Dobbie was joking.

Children of the Earth will be out on DVD the week after it airs.

Did my interview last week, but can't publish any of it till the 16th by request of the BBC.

My Gardner interview got pushed to tomorrow, so I have more time to study [Smile]

I have seen Eureka and I do like it, but I wouldn't really call it like Doctor Who.

Sorry, I meant "Children of the Earth" will be on DVD the week after it airs in the US. Comes out July 28.

One thing I'm definitely asking is if they have plans to keep reducing the lag between UK broadcast and worldwide broadcast...

Ask her what elements of her work in Britain she is determined to retain and what elements she expects to change for an American audience.

Interview done, and sadly embargoed till the 16th (I'll post links here). But she's a very friendly person to talk to.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks to everyone who provided questions and tips!

Holy crap there was a doozy of an unecessary spoiler at the end of the article! Damnit.

There is a mention of plot points that show up almost immediately and have already been mentioned in most every other article I read about it (and seen in the trailers), so I apologize if I gave anything away. But the spoilers I'm trying to keep hidden make those fairly inconsequential [Smile]

I understand the plot-point spoilers in the article and I sort of ran it through a fuzzy mental processor to make sure they didn't stick. (That may not make sense, but it works for me.) However, the single line describing the specific disposition of some of the characters at the end of the article didn't seem necessary to provide context for anything else and it also seems particularly bizarre to include that info in a section titled "What is Torchwood?" Presumably the people most interested in that section will not have watched the show at all. I never would have expected major spoilers there.

Anyway, sorry for peeing on your parade. It's really cool that you got to speak with these people and publish an article about what you've learned. Congrats.

"As we're joining them, have they come to grips with the loss yet? I know that was addressed briefly in the radio plays in between, I don't know if they'll be going into that in this."

What radio plays? I want!

There were three radio plays produced this year, following last year's "Lost Souls" which happens soon after the close of season 2. I think.

Dr Who is a BRITISH man. He's not an AMERICAN man, he's not a british Woman, he's a british MAN.

(I know no one brought up him regenerating as a woman, but it's been brought up before...)

No American Who!!!!

What's next? Rupert Grint as Idgie in Fried Green TomAHtoes?

I don't mind the prospect of an American or preferably Canadian Dr Who spinoff but yes no remake of Dr Who for American audiences or I eat their face.

Bella: Something Jon Pertwee said when I met him (yay name drop). He said that one of the drawing factors about Dr Who is the very BRITISHNESS of the show. And I totally agree with him in that observation. An American Dr would lose that.

As for dropping the Dr's daughter in LA, I'm all for that! That'd be a great series!

Where does one find the Torchwood radio plays?

I see where you're coming from, but while David Tennant or Tom Baker are British, The Doctor isn't (any more than Spock is American).
Following the internal logic of the Who universe, next time he could potentially regenerate as a Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal and there really wouldn't be any reason why not (except that he'd find it harder to get invited to the nicer kind of dinner parties).

I object to the idea of an American Who, not because The Doctor isn't American - one day, with the right actor, he might appear to be - but because there's a perfectly good series called Doctor Who right now. I don't need another one with a different accent.

Having said that, by all means regenerate the Doctor's daughter, team her up with three pretty men and a robot dog, send her to LA, sit back and let the mayhem commence.

The Torchwood radio plays are very good, by the way, although there were a couple of pivotal events in Children of Earth that I figured out while listening to them - even though, weirdly, they are sent before that happens - so it might be better to watch the show first.
As Chris' (brilliant [Smile] ) interviews suggest, a couple of the plays are 'explosive, big budget' productions with, obviously, no budget.

Edit - I imagine that the plays will be out on BBC CD soon. *Goes to see*. Yup - they're out as audiobooks in August.
Sorry about the wonkiness - I think I did something weird just then.

Time Lords can only regenerate into other Time Lords essentially something that looks human.
