WB plans for it to bew their 2009 super-hero film tentpole...

I hope confirming George Miller as director doesn't mean the Motion Capture rumor is true.

And Aquaman? Out of the characters they list as "likely", I'd much rather see J'Onn or Shayera take his place.

(Just not a big Aquaman fan.)

I'm not a big Aquaman fan, either, but the ones they list are the four from the original SuperFriends, plus the only other DC hero to have his own TV show. Only comic fans and people who used to watch JL/JLU know who J'Onn and Shayera are. I can't imagine them doing J'Onn without the green being too cheesy, and Shayera's wings would be unwieldy.

Truth is, they'd be best off using the Young Justice characters from Smallville. Maybe adding in the cast of Birds of Prey (since the Smallville heroes are so testerone-heavy).

Green skin and beetlebrows would be a snap to do these days and not have it look any cheesier than a Amazon warrior who for some reason is wearing the American flag.

If name recognition were truly the most important criteria for heroes chosen, then they would pick Robin (also Superfriends regular) because LOTS more people know about and recognize him than ol' Orin.

And he has a comic that people actually -buy-. [Wink]

They -can't- use Smallville's stuff, it's still an active franchise in its own right. And the Birds of Prey TV show flopped so badly, I doubt they'd even consider it.

Note: The mo-cap rumour was revised from being an all CGI film (a la Beowulf) into mo-cap being used for the OMAC's* and underwater scenes.

Note 2: This post got huge. I've been thinking about this for a while and have a lot on my mind. Apy-poly-logies.

If they -can't- use the Smallville stuff, why are they supposedly courting Welling for the lead? No matter what they say, if you have him headlining, this is going to be seen as "Smallville: The Movie" by the general populace.

That's just one of the things that irks me about this project. While Superman Returns was somewhat under whelming, I thought Routh showed a lot of potential and was disappointed that he didn't get to do much. It's nice to see that he's finally getting some mainstream work outside of Superman, but if he's not in JL, that scuttles the solo franchise.

It's also insane having Batman in this movie. Bale has said he would be glad to do a team up movie. But after they've completed Nolan's three. By having a non-Bale bat, you confuse audiences (more then already - many seemed to be under the impression that Begins was a prequel) and antagonise the Bat-team. If Justice League costs us a third Batman movie, I will flip (and rant far more than I am now).

On to my thoughts on the movie:

I like Aquaman. With the whole "commanding the seas" thing, you could have some real breathtaking and awe-some scenes. But if you don't go to Atlantis, don't show his wife Mera and son Arthur Jr. then he turns into another super strong guy who's comparatively useless if more than a metre out of water.

I've already expressed some of my displeasure with Batman. He'll either look out of place or be turned into an overt superhero, bankrupting Nolan's creative choices and possibly pushing him away from the solo franchise.

The Flash is rumoured to be Barry Allan. It's also rumoured that....I'll post the rest of this at the bottom, in spoilers.**

I love Wonder Woman and have plotted out in my mind a really great movie. I don’t know how they’ll handle her here, but I have faith. She should really be the star, though I fear she’ll just be there most of the movie with the express purpose of doing to Maxwell Lord what she did to him in the comics.

Green Lantern will be John Stewart. Some might kick up a fuss about no Hal Jordan, or call it a racist posting (ie he’s only there because he’s black), but I like him. I think Jordan’s origin and romance with Carrol Faris is too good to skip, so would like to see it being the early basis for a solo movie and have Stewart as the established GL.

Maxwell Lord and the OMAC’s as villains are potentially interesting. If you focus on Checkmate and take the proper time to explore the political and moral ideas behind superheroes. If you treat them like a bunch of robots to punch and a neck to snap, they’ll come off as unremarkable and brings down the whole film. And with so many protagonists, that is my big concern.

My wish list:
-Cut Batman.
-Cut or focus on Aquaman. If he’s “just there”, he’s a joke.
-Give the necessary time to the villains of the piece for them to be an interesting threat.
-If Batman had a detective angle, add J’onn and give it to him. ***
-If Batman had a rich guy angle, add Ollie Queen, and give it to him.
-If you want another member, turn to the Atom (Ryan Choi). His atomic specialty fits in perfectly with the OMAC’s and he’s a canonically humourous character. (Please no Bat-puns.)
-Vixen can help round out the team, or if Ollie is there, Black Canary is a no-brainer.
-Let Chris Bridges do a pass at the script.
-BlackHawks cameo k-plz-thx.

*OMAC= One Man Army Corps, originally a Kirby created hero that was recently turned into a bunch of villains (add comment about name's oxymoron here).

**
SPOILERS START

Supposedly Barry bites the bullet. Which makes perfect sense as he originally died saving the day, and it adds a nice dramatic punch. But Ryan Reynolds is all but confirmed as the Flash, and he'll probably be one of the biggest names they'll use. If they're trying to spin off solo franchises from JL, why are they killing the character with the best chance of success?

END SPOILERS

*** His unique physiology (shape shifter) could even be tied into the OMAC’s story (shape shifting nanobot-robots that wrap themselves around innocent people).

I think Ryan Reynolds would make a good Flash, since my only exposure to him is the Justice League cartoon, I think he could easily pull off Flash's attitude.

My only want for something like this would be Green Lantern. He's probably my favorite out of the group. I don't know which one I'd want, I didn't even realize there were so many choiced. The first one I saw was Kyle Rayner, the one in the cartoon I saw, so that's the one I'd like, plus John Stewart always annoyed me in the Justice League cartoon. So I'd rather have Kyle, but then I'm more interested in the story of his start as a GL superhero, so I'd maybe rather see him in a later movie or a Green Lantern solo movie.

Because every-time a film that involves Superman in some way comes up, people begin speculating that Welling will be approached...but as of yet, all such speculation has not been more than rumor.

By having a non-Bale bat, you confuse audiences

Eh. People are more used to having multiple versions of Batman around than you think. There was a point when reruns of the Adam West version, then-new showings of the Dini-Timm version, and cable runs of the Burton/Schumacher version could all be viewed on TV at the same time.

I think most people get the concept of Batman as a Tarzan/Sherlock Holmes/James Bond type character, where actors and versions differ a lot.

I've already expressed some of my displeasure with Batman. He'll either look out of place or be turned into an overt superhero, bankrupting Nolan's creative choices and possibly pushing him away from the solo franchise

In Nolan's version he wears a costume, has a secret identity, uses super-high-tech devices, and fights a costumed villain AND an immortal eco-terrorist. The next movie is going to introduce the Clown Prince of Crime and the BatCave Computer. I'd say we've already crossed into " overt super-hero" territory.

And again...multiple versions of Batman co-existing is not a new thing. [Smile]

Where did you find these spoilers? I ask because I've seen several "Revealed: The JL Movie plot" things scattered about today, each contradicting each other. Not sure which to believe.

I cannot read Adam West's name without thinking of that cartoon where he's dancing around singing, "A-dam Weeeeest, A-dam Weeeeeeest..."

Puffy, I've been keeping on top of them as they come out. They could all be false, but I'm posting off of what at sites like SHH! is considered to probably be the most true. Which, I know, doesn't say much. Still, It's something to talk about.

The "confuses audience" comment was really pointing at the fact that they're going to see Bale in 2008's Dark Knight then a completely different Batman on screen in 2009's Justice League. Then you're going to go back to Bale?
TV != Cinema. They are two different mediums, and are easily separable in the general mind.
I don't know much about Tarzan/Holmes-on-film, but the only time you had a James Bond come back was a) after Lazenby quit and the producers paid Connery huge money as an emergency fix, and b) when Connery got paid huge money to be in a rival franchise. And the Bond franchise has progressed in a logical, flowing manner (I recommend Bondathoning all twenty-one films in order some time. It's fun watching the changes take place). MGM never produced a rival franchise to itself. When Dalton took over in a more serious vein, they didn't keep Moore's Saint-esque Bond running.

By "overt super-hero" I meant that the Nolan franchise seems to have a vigilante Batman who deals with "fantastically-real" threats. Yeah, they're nothing like what you'd see in real life, but you believe they could be defeated by a ninja. I doubt you'll see Clayface or his ilk, as it would stretch the concept too far. To face Bats off against such a threat - one he'd surely meet in a JL film - you need to go for more of a Burton approach. Which is a take I love, y'know, but I doubt Nolan would do a third solo movie after you do that. It's like taking a warship from her skipper and outfitting it to shoot poop at people. Captain Mc'America isn't going to be happy what you've done to "his" ship, even if it in fact belongs to the government, and he's not going to want to return to it. It will forever be "the ship that shot poop that one time" no matter what you do.

I'm not so good at analogies.

Edit: I see here that Welling is already out of the running. Yay no Smallville connection! Boo internet moving so fast!

Get off my lawn.
