My wife and I are looking for a short but nice vacation somewhere in the northeast US. We live by the Jersey Shore. Some different cities so far looked at: Boston, Annapolis, Ocean City, Niagara Falls. We are looking for somewhere within a several hour driving distance. We have already visited the poconos, so that is out. Any other suggestions. Important note, we are looking for a 4 day weekend in the beginning of November.

Thanks!

Luray Virginia is gorgeous in the fall and a great place for a romantic getaway. A lot of the cabins are very reasonable in November and have very nice amenities so you get the best of camping and luxury. If you're interested, I have some recommendations for places to stay in Luray

I agree, Luray is nice.

Annapolis is also really neat! Of course, I'm from Maryland, so I'm kind of biased, but my Jersey-born fiance and his folks used to have a sailboat and they loved stopping in Annapolis on their travels! There's history, the Naval Academy, small shops, just lots and lots of neat stuff, and it's within driving distance of a lot of other Maryland sights.

By Ocean City, do you mean the MD or NJ one? If MD, it's nice during warm months but pretty hit or miss during the off season. I'd go with Annapolis first out of the two. Things are ALWAYS open. I was down there for a Valentine's Day date last February and even with it being chilly, it was lovely walking around.

I would not suggest Niagara Falls in the fall. Besides being crazy cold, more of the water is diverted away from the falls for electricity production outside of tourist season. Best go in the summer, and plan on spending most of your time on the Canada side.

If you've never had much time to visit DC, well, there's plenty to do here, and you can spend your long weekend indoors if the weather is bad. If you're looking for someplace cute and walkable to stay, I'd suggest staying in or near Old Town Alexandria - you can hop onto the Metro to get to DC without a problem (no idea of the prices, tho).

I love hiking in the Shenandoahs, so if that's your thing, you'd have plenty to do while staying in Luray. In fact, you'd be quite close to some of the more popular trails, such as Old Rag, White Oak Canyon (which is AMAZING in the fall), and my personal favorite for an afternoon romp, Little Devil Stairs.

(And thus ends my knowledge of the Eastern seaboard.)

If you go to Annapolis, go to the Boar's Head Restaurant. They have a cool basement entrance and muscles to die for...and I never liked muscles before eating them here.

Dem, do you mean Ram's Head?

Personally, I prefer Cantlers - Ram's Head has a neat atmosphere but Cantlers has the superior food (including mussels) and an amazing view. There are lots of nice places to eat in Annapolis though.

I'll chime in for Luray as well; it's really lovely out there.

I agree with Traceria about Ocean City.

I love Luray too (well, Shenandoah, really; Luray proper has a fantastic bookstore but is not exactly a cultural center), though I will point out that beginning of November is still considered "leaf season," which means heavier occupancy and occasionally higher prices. In other words, book now if you want it.

What about a trip out to Pennsylvania to see the Frank Lloyd Wright houses (Kentucky Knob, Falling Water)? It's on my to-do list some day, though I'm not sure when. There's supposed to be some nice B&Bs in the area.

Yeah, another good one is the Chart House. [Smile]
