So it's been some time since I posted anything for the handful that follow my music here. I posted this over on facebook a few days back, but thought my two fans on Hatrack might like to be tuned into my latest musical machinations.

There are a few pieces in the album (you can click on it over on the lower right of the page) that have not been heard here on Hatrack, and there is a complete recording of my string quartet, and some other pieces I've linked here in the past.

Now play fair folks, I asked you to drop a line if you listen to the music. You don't even have to share your opinion, I'd really just like to know who's giving a listen so that those who have expressed interest in the past can hear it before it drops off the front page, or else I have to pimp the thread and bump it in hopes that these people don't miss it. Your music reminds me a bit of Radiohead with it's simple flowing ambiance. It speaks well of it that I was able to get lost inside it quite easily. I need to hear it a bit more before I can really say what I like about it. I'll put it on again during my morning tomorrow.

One of those samples sounds like reversed calliope or something of the sort?... I kind of like it, but after an extended listening something in it makes me shudder weirdly.

There is no calliope in the recordings- many of the instruments are digital, and of the digital instruments I programed every one, so there's definitely no calliope in there.
A friend asked a similar question about reverse enveloping, and the answer is that in the first track there is no reverse enveloped sound, but there is a very light attack and long decay on the synthesizer sound that doesn't exactly sound natural. I am always trying to skirt close to the perceptible range, meaning many of the sounds grow slowly out of no definite attack point, which can be unsettling, as listeners of my music know, I like to keep my rhythms pretty loose. So the whole thing can sound jangly and off-kilter at moments, which to me is lovely, but requires several hearings to adjust to.

Heh. I haven't actually directly addressed attack and decay in sound since my days of playing with a Commodore 64. My dabbling in music these days is pretty much straight forward MIDI- which I'm sure you'd find fairly dull.
I definitely appreciate the craft with which you layer your sounds. Envy, even.

Well, actually Sterling a fair bit of the sound production I do is midi based. Midi is definitely really hard to use as a basis for sound production, but it has certain obvious advantages that make it ideal when you're working on something that demands a good deal of flexibility on back end tweaking. That, and the instruments I build using midi are really portable and flexible themselves, so they give me lots of freedom to adjust to new ideas as they come up. That said, "straight forward" midi is extremely dull, yes, but midi itself is still a brilliant concept for more reasons than processor capacity conservation.
I haven't yet delved into the rich world of open sound control and Fiddle and all of these insane new innovations, especially considering there's a lot that can be done with midi and pure digital post production.
