So... if I'm going to drill into my right cheekbone to relieve the sinus pressure there (before the damned thing explodes), what size bit would y'all recommend?

Man I know that feeling. Best wishes.

I'd say the bigger the better. You don't want to have to poke a second hole if the first one isn't big enough.

I highly recommend the vick's vapor rub gel pads. You put them in a little heater machine and it creates a menthol steam. It helps a ton to be able to breath better. The machine is about 10 bucks and the gel pads are about 3 dollars for a 10 pack which should last about a week.

I'm a huge fan of the sinus rinse. You can get pots (more of a pouring action) or a bottle that is able to deliver more of a stream. You mix a little of the saline-based powder in to warm water, and shoot the stuff through each nostril. I can usually feel an immediate difference in pressure. You also need to have a lot of tissues handy, but it's so worth it in my opinion.

Capsaicin? Seriously? Wow, I'm going to count that as a drill bit, actually. I'll let you know how it goes.

There's sinus buster, mentholatum, and neti-pots.

Mentholatum doesn't actually fix anything, it just makes the sensations vastly more bearable. Neti-pots, which I personally loathe, actually work. Having all three available should be the best defense you have against sinus pressure.

Glad it helped! I love it. I was hooked on it when it got me cleared of a bad sinus infection in a few days without antibiotics. Keep the bottle in a cool place. It looses its effectiveness fast if left anyplace too warm.

I also use the saline rinse on occasion (not the neti pot but the squeeze bottle); I think they help keep you from getting to that point.

When I first started using it, they had a squirt bottle. That could give you a heart attack. I don't think the burn from the measured dose/mist bottles they sell now is bad at all. But maybe better to wait for Lisa's response; I'm sort of a hardened user by now and it just seems refreshing to me.

Caveat: if your tissues are already very raw/inflamed from itchy allergies or post nasal drip, it can make you cry.

I might need to print this page when I hit the pharmacy on Friday.

Any suggestions for when a cold moves into the chest? I'm sorta prone to bronchitis and can't seem to figure out the best way to head it off before it gets bad and requires steroid shots or antibiotics, neither of which are options for me this time around.

Shanna, if I get a bad cold it's almost guaranteed to move into my chest, so I sympathize, although it doesn't seem to get quite as bad as what you're describing. I attack colds really aggressively at the beginning -- Cold Eeze, Vit. C, lots of liquids, herbal teas and as much rest as possible, plus all the sinus stuff mentioned above -- to try to keep it from getting there.

I've found that for me prolonged sinus/nasal congestion and post nasal drip seem to be recipes for chest congestion later, so I just do everything possible to keep my head clear. Once it moves into my chest, it's probably there for a while.

But it sounds like you may already at that point, so I just wish for you to get better soon if that is the case!

Mucinex hasn't worked for me in the past but once I get paid in the morning, I'm going to attack my pharmacist and hope they can give me some other suggestions.

I'm to the point where I can't breathe through my nose and I cough every five seconds. Breathing while lying horizontal is completely out of the question and I feel like a small child is sitting on my chest.

How much is a round of antibiotics without health insurance? Though I should probably find a cheap clinic to write me a prescription first.

I should have been more specific. Mucinex DM.

And good luck! The clinic may be able to help you get inexpensive antibiotics too.

Is the DM the one that also helps you sleep? Because Mucinex in the past just made me really wired and had me feeling twice as bad the next morning after it had worn off.

No. It's the one with both the expectorant and the cough suppressant.

Shanna, Publix and WalMart have both been doing commercials about their $4 antibiotics. I think Publix may even have been doing free antibiotics for a while. You should be able to find some really cheap, and the clinic may even know.

Also, God bless the person who invented the cough suppressant/expactorant combo. Best thing for a nasty sinus infection that's worked down to the lungs.
