Ok, so we all know about Caedes. It's got some cool backgrounds on there. I've used their better fractal images as backgrounds for years now.
BUT. They are not the best. Far from it, there are far better websites out there for brilliant, awe-inspiring imagery that makes you want to look at your desktop and think "Whoa, I want to look at that."
Try Phong, for instance. It appears to be some sort of artistic collective for various artists to share their work.
Hint: Freely shared art, so long as it isn't distributed by you for profit, makes excellent desktop material.
What sites do you know about? Share the love! Distract us from our homework! Make us ooh and aah at the brilliance of this stuff.

I guess my philosophy is that the more you surround yourself with an aesthetic, the more that aesthetic will become a part of you. Even if it's just a background image that you only see when you load up your computer.
And I tend to avoid DeviantArt... It is a silly place.

No desktop background will ever defeat my college desktop background picture of Claire Forlani.
