So I'm writing a grant proposal, and they specify that I should include a "2-page CV". Is this a general comment about the right length, or is there a specific set of things which should be included, some of which would be left out of a 1-page CV? Google doesn't seem helpful on the point.

I usually assume it means "If it's longer than two pages, we're not reading the rest of it."

My general rule is that you should have one document that lists pretty much everything of interest professionally for any possible jobs/careers you might be interested in the future. Tutoring, volunteer work, papers submitted, previous grants, awards, most every job you've held, education, significant classwork, etc, etc.

You should also have a one-page resume (or 3-5 page CV if you're in academia) that is your general resume for your current career heading. For example, I'm an analyst in energy markets, and my resume is basically focused on data analysis and modeling, since that's what I'm interested in pursuing, and light on energy, since I don't really care about working in this particular industry.

Whenever something comes up that you need to submit a resume/CV for, start with your base general resume/CV, and add and subtract from your extremely lengthy one to tailor it for the application (without being shady - i.e. you can't just delete some of your job history) until you've hit the right length for the application.

Which is an extremely long-winded way of saying that I'd suggest KoM to turn in a CV of two pages or close to it, if he has enough interesting stuff to fill out two pages without making it look like filler. Which I'm sure he does, since I had 1.75 of good stuff (for academia purposes) coming out of undergrad.

Most US agencies that accept research grant proposals ask for a 1 or 2 page CV for all investigators. There is typically a standard format for such CVs. They are usually looking for relevant recent appointments, education, a list of relevant publications and sometimes previous research funding and major awards/honors. Including anything more than that will more likely be harmful. Stick closely to the guidelines and page limits. If its longer than requested in the guidelines, your application will very likely be rejected without review.

If there isn't a suggested format, ask some professor who's been successfully submitting grants to this agency for an example and follow it. Grant applications are not like job applications. What they are looking for in CVs is evidence that you have the background necessary to do the research you are proposing. That may be a little different if this is a training grant or young investigator award.

It is a grant for "Beginning PIs", people who have recently been awarded their PhDs. That's me!

Thanks for the advice. [Smile]

Well, I submitted it. Project description, project summary, thesis abstract, two letters of reference, letter of commitment, budget and justification, references cited, two biographical sketches (known as 'CVs' everywhere except the NSF's software), and a cover sheet with various arcance bureaucratic boxes ticked off. All done, fingers crossed!
