I wonder if where this fits in the Whoniverse. Will Depp be the next incarnation, the current incarnation, a past incarnation? Or will the Whoniverse split into the American audience film reality with 1 doctor and the BBC tv reality where there have been 11 incarnations?

2012 is really soon - Matt Smith should still be the Doctor. This could get weird...maybe someone will be in an alternate universe. Maybe Rose's universe, so we can see Tennant.

I'm confused. Will Depp rewrite continuity, or be #12? If they want a rewrite, why not use Tennant? If #12, then why do it after having Matt Smith for barely a season?

This should have run in The Onion. It sounds ridiculous to me. Depp would suck in the role, for one thing. But also, there's no way in hell that they'd get permission to do a competing Doctor.
This is how rumors get started.

Maybe this will be a version of "Dr. Who" from "Doctor Who and the Daleks"? Similar, but a fundamentally different character.

I think this rumour has been debunked already. Not happening.
I'd love to see JD as the Master sometime, though.

Okay first of all I would love a Doctor Who movie and second of all I like Johnny Depp's wierd eccentric acting enough that I think it could work.
But if it were to happen it would have to either be a non cannon or alternate continuality Doctor like "Scream of the Shalka" or that one time with Mr Bean.

Reason being is that I like Matt Smith and don't want to see him go away to make room for NUmber 12 for a few more years, okay. I have it.
If they make it like "The Five Doctor's" kind of story, Depp as Twelve, Tennant returns as Ten, Matt as Eleven, Eccelston as Nine and takes all four of them to save the day with this to herald either Depp becomming the Doctor LATER (and I mean much later) or simply an alternate future incarnation whose number is unspecified.
This is something that can work if done right.

Ew. Just the thought of Johnny Depp turning the Doctor into one of his patented drunk/molester/psycho/manchild characters makes me want to spew.
There are probably dozens of other American/Canadian actors and actresses who would be better for the job than Depp, if they had to go with someone from this side of the pond. But there's no earthly reason to ever do that.
