I read this column by Roger L. Simon this morning and it contained the following lines:

"Obama has been unable to use the Bully Pulpit. No one pays attention to him. The vaunted Demosthenes of the campaign trail disappeared literally upon inauguration. He hasn’t been able to convince anyone of anything."

When I read this, I thought, "Don't blame me! I voted for Locke!"

Note: I'm not interested in an online argument about the pros and cons of Pres. Obama and his policies. I just thought this was funny.

Obama seems to be failing more completely than any president in my lifetime.
I'm certainly not impartial towards the divide between Obama's performance and GWB's legacy but I would certainly like to hope most people agree this is a terribly written article. He says this, yet not but a month ago people were straining to try to paint things as "Obama's <insert catastrophic event of the GWB presidency here>"

hint: it wasn't out of reverence

Sorry to derail the discussion into one about real politics. I'd much rather talk about Demosthenes, Locke, Achilles, Hot Soup, and Shen.

Do you think Starways Congress has lost the Mandate of Heaven?

Which one? The Starways Congress in the Enderverse or the Starways Congress in the A. Bertram Chandler Commodore Grimes books?

Yeah even the Demosthenes reference is strained.

Colin, welcome to Hatrack.

When a person starts a thread here they don't really have control over the direction that it goes. Often, as happened here, people will pick up on what looks like the primary topic of the thread and discuss it for a little while before thread drift happens. Other times the thread will veer off of its creator's intended course. Occasionally this will happen with the very first response. In any case, while you're welcome to try to change a conversation's direction, I hope that you won't be too frustrated if your attempts to do so don't succeed.

A word of advice, if you want to do a soft reset of the topic, kittens are usually a safe bet.

Jake, BlackBlade,

Thanks for the advice. My character would be much improved if I were more humble, but I am not so arrogant that I would believe I could control others' conversations. I don't take offense and am not surprised when people say what they want to say. 8-)

Nevertheless, as a "new guy" in this forum, I consider myself a guest in your space. My parents would be mortified if they thought I'd entered your "home" and picked a fight about politics (or religion). I was just trying to make it clear that I'm not here to pick (or even participate in) fights about politics.

Hey, did I mention that my daughter was playing with the cutest little kitten last night? 8-)

Best regards,
--Colin Fraizer

A kitten killed my family when I was a boy. They overdosed on its cuteness. Thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?

Jake,

I'm so sorry to hear about the pain that kittens have caused you.

When I was a boy, my older brother dissected kittens and squirrels and I was sent away to a school where we all slept in the nude. It bothered me greatly, so I killed some bullies.

Not with the old "ambush 'em in the shower with a soap bar in a sock" trick, I hope. That'd be copyright violation.

Look who knows so much. Well, it just so happens that your friend here was only mostly referencing that movie. There's a big difference between mostly referencing a movie and all-the-way referencing a movie.

You know what movie is awesome? The Last Airbender!

I hope that M. Night Shyamalan is available to direct "Ender's Game" and that he can play Adm. Chamrajnagar.

And I hope that he changes the pronunciation of the main characters' names to "eeen-DEHR" and "Bay-AHN".

Oh, and that he completely changes all the characters' personalities and makes it a love triangle between Ender, Petra, and Bean who all should be cast as people in their early 20s.

Next up on The WB's "Ender's Game"

Petra breaks it to Ender that she's carrying Bonito's love chid. And it's just two weeks to prom!

Dear god I hate that channel. In fact, I think that's what I really mean when I express my hatred for sitcoms.
