I was just talking to a friend about a great concert coming to town that he's not sure he's going to be able to make, and we started talking about previous shows we regret missing.

I was wondering if anyone here ever missed a show that you still kind of regret. Doesn't have to be a concert. Could be a play, book signing, convention, touring art exhibition, or any other event that, given a second chance, you'd make a greater effort to see.

OSC came for a talk and signing at the local university. I had it on my calendar for weeks, I was so excited. The day before I started feeling bad - the day of I was in bed with a raging fever and and extremely bad case of strep throat. I missed OSC. [Frown] But if any of you were there, at least I wasn't responsible for giving you strep!

My cousins had extra They Might be Giants tickets last year. I don't remember why I didn't go, but they had tons of fun.

I saw Wierd Al Yankovic a couple of years ago and I gotta say that he was the best performance I have ever seen, hes coming to Phoenix this next month and I cant afford to go. I really kicked myself in the ass for missing out on Band of Skulls and Cage the Elephant in one week.

I'm with you. I saw him in SLC a few years ago and it was incredible. I used to think I just liked him for the nostalgia of listening to his tapes in 5th grade, but that show turned me into an unironic fan.

A couple years ago he came to Albuquerque and I wanted to go, but I had work the next day and decided to blow it off. I heard stories about it later that still make me regret missing it. Apparently he added "Albuquerque" to the end of the setlist just for this show. And he did some hilarious stuff with it, just to mess with the audience. I'm still kicking myself for missing that gig.

Here's another one:

Last year the New Mexico Symphony had some problems with management, and ended up going on strike. I work next to someone whose wife plays viola with the symphony, and got some inside info about a few independent shows they were going to put on to raise money during the strike.

The first show was Tchaikovsky's 4th, which I blew off. Next, when the strike continued, they did Mahler's 5th, which I managed to see.

Usually there's a bit of separation seeing a symphony in a large hall. But this show was played in a small-ish church downtown. All the musicians squeezed in to the front and sides of the seating area, and the audience sat in the pews. I got there early enough to get a seat near the front, and it was unlike anything I'd ever heard before.

The acoustics of the room didn't work as well, but it almost didn't matter because of the raw power they were able to transmit. It was so loud that I wished I'd brought ear plugs. It felt like seeing a punk band at a club, but they were playing Mahler. I happened to have the entire double-bass section about 6 feet from my right ear, and seeing them crank out their parts gave me a whole new appreciation for the piece.

The final show they did before the strike ended was Dvorak's 9th. By that time word of mouth spread, and the church was completely packed. Standing room only, all the foyers were full, and people were being turned away. Dvorak may not be as heavy as Mahler, but it was still an amazing show. Those were two concerts that were unlike anything I'm ever likely to see again, and as glad as I was to be able to see them, I'm still kind of disappointed that I missed Tchaikovsky. But I guess 2 out of 3 isn't bad.

I was Comic Con in 2002, and a reading / Q&A with Robert Jordan was on Friday. I had to work, so I solaced myself with a Terry Brooks panel on Saturday. Unfortunately, Mr. Jordan has since passed away.
