I keep thinking about the long-term effects of current events in Japan, with large areas unlivable or plain undesirable it occured to me that some Japanese may choose to leave the country as it may be easier for some who have no physical or financial identity left. There are already several large Japanese ex-patriot communities around the globe but most exist in America, so I wonder about the liklihood of a small exodus to Hawaii or maybe S. California, thoughts?

There is also a VERY large Japanese community in Brazil. It was not uncommon to meet people in Brazil that was either from Japan or had family that lived there.
In fact, the largest Japanese population outside of Japan is in Brazil, with numbers over 1.5 million.

The area that was affected so far, barring further developments in the nuclear issue, was disproportionately old even for Japan. So I think there would be less immigration than one would normally expect.
