An administrator at my school is going to announce today that he has taken a job at another school. It will be a surprise for most of the staff. He is not well liked (varies from those that think he is ineffective to those that think he is the anti-christ). Is the proper response when he announces this to applaud? I would think yes, but make sure it is in the polite-applause mode, "congrats on the new job." I don’t want there to be 30 seconds of awkward silence, but don’t want to start applauding if it will be taken the wrong way. Thoughts?

I say go with what everyone else is doing, honestly if you clap it 'can be' taken the wrong way, and if you don't clap that 'can also' be taken the wrong way...

So to prevent yourself from looking like an oddball just do what everyone else does.....

.-.

How about a slow and mocking clap that lasts uncomfortably long after the applause is supposed to have died down, which draws attention to you, and you're just staring all cold and mean at him, eyes glaring and unblinking

I think Dem appreciates this administrator enough to care about their feelings, anyways.
So sam your advice was useless, but definetly something I might do to school staff I despise :D

Ok, case and point: brutal honesty directed at someone who is making a joke. A funny one. Good job Amelia.

You should be able to get a cue from how he makes the announcement.

I look at him more as a bad hire, than as someone who is intentionally doing harm. I am just trying to figure out what would happen if we all loved him. We would probably all react with 'no, don't goes'. That would never fly here.

Consider yourself lucky. One of our least-loved administrators is retiring this January, and all of us who're among his direct reports have been asked to come up with a short, humorous skit to honor the occasion. We were specifically instructed not to make it too celebratory. *shudder*
