Alright so I went to a staff christmas party at the place where I work and it was actually kind of decent, but the music was so loud for 90% of the establishment that it was fairly impossible to get a half decent conversation in.

Not that I didn't manage to, I am a hobby obsessed nerd after all so I was able to talk to a few people and show off my simple drawing skills and managed to convince one of my bosses to go check out tv tropes sometime...

But I would have really prefered going to the Goonmeet that was saturday night but due to poor planning couldn't arrange a place to stay in time for afterwards, bah.

I would say it wasn't a complete waste of time as I got some free food and a few conversations in but it's really a tie breaker, the music was too loud and not to my taste had it not been within 20 minute driving distance this would have been a wasted evening.

The girl I was sorta interested in from work wasn't even there either, bah.

I went, I mingled a little, I declared victory and returned home.

Yeah that's worthy of Caesar probably.

In short it was a tolerable experience with some upsides but I probably wouldn't have missed anything had I stayed home and watched anime or played Supreme Commander.

Blayne, I am sorry you didn't have much fun there. But most people probably wouldn't agree with you on that.

How much fun you have somewhere has more to do with your attitude and what you bring to the table than it does the event itself, at least for a lot of the time. Not just for you....I am not trying to pick on you......but for us all.

I used to have fun at Denney's at 3 am, for heavens sake. It had everything to do with who I was with and what my attitude was rather than the time or the venue.

While that's true, it's also true that there are limits to the fun to be extracted from coworkers. It's not as though they are selected based on common interests, much less brains.

I have tremendous fun with my coworkers. Perhaps I'm lucky.

I love half of my coworkers and several of them are my closest friends. The other half smiles alot and plays passive-aggressive mind games. The joys of working in an establishment that is 90% female.

We don't do holiday parties but a recent two hour holiday meeting on a Sunday morning was followed by a spontaneous two hour let's-just-chill hang out in the parking lot.

My co-workers are a hoot, but I don't hang out with them that often. They're obsessed with getting me high as they all think it'd be "totally hilarious."

We did have a lovely potluck earlier in the month.
Parties are not exactly my cuppa tea, but I would have fancied going to a costume party dressed as iamamiwhoami's freaky scary puppet to scare people.

When you say you are having "tremendous fun with my coworkers" are you saying

A) My coworkers and I are having a good time together.

B) I enjoy torturing and psychologically destroying them as they blindly wiggle like the puppets they are in my net of lies, intrigues and mental games.

I'm good either way, just curious.

(If you choose B, please keep the sinister laughter to yourself, thank you.)

I couldn't agree with you more. The best time I ever had at 3am was at Denny's. It was the night Star Wars Episode III came out. My buddy Jason and his "Gay Posse" as he used to call it invited me. Those guys really knew how to party.

Muhaha...it's primarily A. Skiing, sailing, squash, foosball, potlucks, movies, hikes, restaurants, happy hours, etc.

(I note that you didn't specify that I had to keep my "sinister" laugh to myself if I answered A. [Big Grin] )

Personally my only interest in my coworkers extends to making our time together go as easily and painlessly as possible. So I don't get in their hair, but I like to lift their spirits and tell them jokes or funny stories, and ask them harmless questions about their weekends. It makes everything easier.

Absolutely. I currently work with several people that I consider genuine friends, and the same has been true in other jobs, but it certainly hasn't been the case everywhere I've worked, or even for the full duration of the time I've worked in a given place.

I went to a business networking type event a year ago. It was extremely boring. I remember thinking, "I'm not going to go this again." (This year I have to go nonetheless)

Yet at the event I met a team with a very interesting product and got their contact info.

5 months later this proved very valuable and made everything worthwhile.

So sometimes you have to do things you don't necessarily enjoy so much to get a reward later and so on.

I like most of my coworkers. Out of 14 I'd say there are 3 I get along great with, 8 I can have a good time with in a social situation with only a little bit of frustration, and only 3 I'd rather leave at the office (since I don't have much choice about it there!).

Even so, our holiday party is still a luke warm event. I'm not sure why. It's the same group of people that we have happy hours with, and we always have a blast at our "annual meeting" every year, but the Holiday party sort of fizzles. I mean, it's not torture, but it's just not FUN.
