Also where you are has an effect, Phoenix is not a pedestrian friendly city and thusly people who have cars are prone to stay in them when possible.

For me, children. Getting two kids in and out of the car is a massive hassle and I would rather just wait than deal with it. Also, the older one can't run away and make other problems.

I did drive-thru this morning. But I was coming back from the vet and had my parrot in the car. And it was 35 degrees outside which is obscene for Louisiana.
But yeah, that was the first time I've been in a drive thru in a long time!

In the Summer I go inside. In the winter I use the drive thru. Comfort is the main reason. Although, if it was really as bad as the OP describes, I'd probably still go in. There's a patience vs. laziness dilemma that tips the scale.

Such institutions cater to my preference to run as many errands as possible without putting on pants.

The real reason McDonalds serves their coffee at scalding temperatures---to cut down on the drive-through flashers.
I go by the 5 car rule. If 5 cars are in line to the ordering speaker--I go inside.
Some places, that number varies. If I have my wife and son--I add cars because it takes them longer to get in and out of the car. If I see a long line in the restaurant--I stick with drive-through.

I prefer drive through, being anti-social I chose the drive through for it's lack of interpersonal communication...

Its not always bad, just ask any guy that has worked nights on drive-thru in a college town. Then the flashers are usually funny or appreciated.
My mother had a bad experiance though some years back, all he was wearing was a t-shirt and his mood was hidden but advertised. People are creepy.
