Dredd

Epic

Taken 2

I suggest watching the trailers before commenting, only because my expectations for each film were vastly different before and after.

To begin with, Taken 2 looks like a complete rehash of the first film, except with a small twist (oh no, it's the mother instead of the daughter!). I'm really surprised that the first movie was popular enough to garner a sequel. It was a decent action movie, but I didn't really get the mass appeal. And do we really need a sequel to it? Why not just make another Liam Neelson movie? Aren't they all basically just him killing things, anyway?

Dredd just looks retarded. The original was campy and stupid, but it's considered a cult classic because there's nothing else like it. You can tell in the preview that they're trying to recreate that vibe, but I don't think it will work as well with modern audiences. All those silly one-liners just come off as stupid and unoriginal, presumably ripped straight from the original movie (though I can't remember, honestly). There's so many movie stereotypes going on in the trailer alone that I'm not sure if the film is a parody or simply poorly designed. I guess we'll have to wait to find out. Either way, I'm disappointed.

Epic looks surprisingly promising. I have to admit I had never even heard of this movie until I saw the trailer pop up on imdb. It reminds me of Fern Gully to some degree, but with a gender reversal. That's not a bad thing, exactly, but I'm hoping it's not the same plot. The trailer has some cool visuals and solid action scenes, however, and I like the song it's using. Here's hoping the film is equally good.

Has anyone else seen any new trailers for recently announced movies? What do you guys think of these?

I actually initially thought that the first movie was going to be one you "dreaded" and the second movie was going to be one you thought was epic, and the third movie was going to be one to which you were taken.

I pretty much agree with what you say, though consider me not up on my cult classics, but I've never heard of Dredd until now. I'm honestly surprised Liam Neeson is doing another "Taken". He just seems like such a quality actor that his talents shouldn't be wasted doing, as you say, rehashes. But, he can do what he wants. I imagine it was pretty fun to make.

I rarely go to the theater anymore, so I can never keep track of which trailers are new. I recently watched one for Hyde park on Hudson which I thought looked interesting. Bill Murray wouldn't have been my first choice for FDR, but it looks like pretty good. Sort of an American, more lighthearted version of The Kings Speech perhaps.

You've never heard of Judge Dredd? You might be a touch too young.

What about Demolition Man?

Hmm... I might've heard of Judge Dredd, though I think I assumed he was a rapper or something. I have watched parts of Demolition Man, courtesy of Saturday afternoon movies.

Edit: Just looked up the dates and I was 5 when Demolition Man came out and 7 for Judge Dredd.

Judge Dredd is one of my favorite terrible movies.

Did it seem weird to anyone else that the entire trailer is absent a single shot of Urban's face? I didn't even know who was playing Dredd.

They did that intentionally.

In the comics upon which it is based, they never show Judge Dredd's face. That's why they did it in the movie. Fans of the original comic were up in arms about the Sylvester Stallone film precisely because they show the audience Dredd's face.

He's supposed to be the faceless arm of the law.

I can well understand the artistic choice involved here. I think though that A 2 hour movie where you never see his face will be, I don't know, distracting?
