For some reason I was sure that there were some Hatrackers on there too.

Anyone else use that site and is sad it's closing and disappearing forever? I think I've been on there almost as long as I've been here - discovered both sites around the same time.

While Hatrack is not what it used to be, I'm so glad it's still here with all the archives and history still intact.

One of my best friends growing up is losing his job as a writer there. Not somewhere I regularly go, but impacts me a bit regardless.

That's one of the things that is upsetting people over there the most. People there, especially long term posters and lurkers have a lot of affection for those involved in running, writing and moderating the site. It's rotten to see such brilliant, dedicated people be made unemployed.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

All of its history post-2003. A massive number of threads were deleted during the Great Purge. Everything that hadn't been bumped within 6 months was deleted, resulting in the loss of about 3 and a half years worth of threads. It always seemed like such a senseless move on Card's part.

I've never actually visited Television Without Pity, and don't know much about it, but I definitely sympathize with the people who are losing their home online, and even moreso with the people losing their jobs. What's the story behind its closing?

Money, apparently. I get the impression that a lot of site users may be the kind of people who are not overwhelmingly addicted to social media and disinclined to click though on banner ads. Although the number of users kept going up, that sort of user may not be sufficiently profitable.

From what I've read, this is mostly to do with incompetence. If you have a large and growing user base, you have to evolve ways of monetizing a service. They failed to develop the site over time, and so the decline is not a surprise for me at all.

Did anyone archive any of that stuff privately or anything? I would love to see some of those lost threads.

Not that I'm aware of. If someone has, though, I'd love to get a copy.
