Anybody else stoked for this? I have it pre-ordered on my nook and I'm tempted to stay up late and start reading it after midnight.

I've kinda cleared my schedule by assigning two of my classes to projects so I can sneak some reading in during the day!

I HAVE POSTED SPOILERS BELOW. THEY ARE CLEARLY MARKED IF YOU WANT TO AVOID THEM.

I would ask that anyone else who posts spoilers, please note them so those trying to avoid spoilers can do so.

My brother pre-ordered it and it already downloaded on his iPad! But my nook hasn't yet. He is taunting me.

Just like this: [Laugh] [Evil Laugh]

Me right now: [Wall Bash] [Cry] [Wall Bash]

My brother used to never read recreationally. Now is the Stormlight Archive Evangelist - trying to convince the world to read this book. Both my parents read it too - it's brought our family together. I'm not even kidding.

Preordered a while ago, and Amazon tells me it should be arriving tomorrow. I'm pretty excited.

Apparently some UK and Canadian chains had a mixup and released it late last week, so a bunch of people there already have theirs.

I will definitely be picking it up, although I'm going to have to skim through the first book first.

It's neat to see Brandon getting the star treatment with this release.

I'm super excited, too, and just finished a reread via audiobook of the first one. Now it's just a matter of waiting for my copy to show up in the mail since I preordered the hard copy. The next day or so is going to be difficult. My husband just got it as an audiobook, so he's already in the mix! Waited this long, what's another day, right? [Angst]

Just got the ebook.

The problem is, I have to be at work at 5am. So do I just read a few chapters and turn in early or use the book to keep me up all night and go to work un-rested?

First of all - JASNAH!!!!!
JASNAH!!!
JASNAH!!!

OK, had to get that out of my system. I KNEW it was about to be bad - Shallan's little recap on the boat of how great things were - she got to become a scholar, they had a plan to fix her family's soulcaster, she was betrothed to a high prince's son....it was all too good to last. I expected a shipwreck or an attack, but not for Jasnah! Yet....no body, so maybe? I love Jasnah as a character so much.

Still, nice to see Shallan get out on her own and realize how much power she has in herself.

Now, at the end of part I - Amaram just showed up, and folks, stuff just got real.

This book is so good but I've only read Part I and I am emotionally compromised, I am no longer fit to command.

Question to those who have started reading: How do you think I will fare without a reread of book 1? It's been about 1 1/2 years. I was just so *exhausted* (in a good way) after Kaladin's story, I felt I had lived through it myself.

You should be okay. There's most of a reread for the Way of Kings and a ten-minute recap on Tor.com if you need a refresher.

Just finished it. Not quite in 1 sitting, but I've been sick so I read the 1st 3/4 yesterday and finished it today.

I love the 1st book and recently re-read it, but I also will often read the last 100 ages or so since I love that ending. The ending to this one didn't have the "Sanderson-climax-avalanche" like most of his other books do, but overall the whole book was so engaging I'm hard pressed to think of any section that I'd love to simply go read and re-read like I do the last 10% of the 1st one. I'd simply want to read the whole thing.

Highly recommended!

And this is spoiler-free, but... wow. Shallan's "deep truth" was one I really really really did NOT see coming.

I'm reading it surprisingly slowly. Normally something this good would have me engaged from cover to cover but I'm finding myself putting it down between chapters to savor and reflect on what I have read. I'm still not to halfway yet.

Really? I actually expected her deep truth to be that since the first book, well not the exact instrument involved...

I was so mad at Kaladin for parts of this book.

I also predicted Shallan's deep truth since early on. That one didn't feel as revelatory.

Oh, goodness - Adolin! "I'm not my father" indeed!

I loved that things weren't rosy for Kaladin - it wasn't treated as "oh, he's a radiant and honorable now" We saw the struggle to remain an honorable man and that felt very right to me. of course he would continue to struggle with things, especially after the details behind Roshone were revealed.

The moment he shares in the chasm with Shallan when he realizes that she has seen the same, or worse, than he has and still goes on was a very well written scene. What a rocky relationship these two are headed toward, with their honorspren/liespren companions!

Where's book 3? [Big Grin]

Finally finished it.

SPOILERS AHEAD<<<<

I knew Jasnah would be back. Her death was just too quick and easy for someone with stormlight. I didn't expect the way she came back. That is going to be interesting.

Oh Adolin. I fear for the boy. I really like him and I'm glad Sadeas is apparently gone now but I fear for Adolin so much. I have a feeling he will be dead in the next book or two. Not only because of his murder of Sadeas but also to make room for what looks like a possible romantic relationship between Kaladin and Shallan. Their experiences in the chasm was probably the best of the book for me.

Dalinar bonding the Stormfather! Samuel L Jackson is no longer the supreme BAMF, Dalinar has stripped him of the title with that move.

I was cheering like a crazed football fan watching my team win the Super Bowl when Kaladin jumped in the arena to save Adolin. I really wanted him to use his powers and show himself to the world but the way things went down was pretty cool too.

All these other secret societies are fascinating. The Ghostbloods, the Diagram group, Amaram and his cronies, etc. It really sounds like all these groups are trying to do the right thing, they just seem to be going about it in some pretty abominable ways. It will be interesting to see where their stories lead.

Lift had better return in the next book. She just has way too much awesomeness to not be seen again. My favorite Interlude by far.

The King getting scolded by Lopen's mother, priceless. Almost the best scene in the book. Why is not the best? Because Lopen steals the show with this line:

“Oh, storms yes! Everybody, give the Lopen your spheres! I have glowing that needs to be done.”

Apparently, Zahel was also in Warbreaker. It's been a while since I read it so I need to go do a re-read as I barely remember it.

Spoilers, of course.

The third book will be all about Szeth. I've heard titles tossed around including Stones Unhallowed and Skybreaker. I think it'll be a fascinating read, especially now that he's dropped his previous life as an assassin, and also acquired a little something-something from Nalthis (the world of Warbreaker). "Hello, would you like to destroy some evil today?"

Some feedback I've read seems to indicate that, now that Sanderson has broken into more of a mainstream audience, his Cosmere-related cues aren't quite as satisfactory to many of his readers as they used to be. Myself, I love the Easter eggs. Can't get enough of them. Other readers feel that they detract from the plot of the story at hand.

I just think it's going to be fascinating watching Sanderson juggle that concern while sticking NIGHTBLOOD in the next book.

I also get the feeling that we still don't have Sanderson's total vision. I mean, I was expecting the struggle to reach Urithiru to last at least a couple more books. But we've already reached that point. With eight more books, where is Sanderson taking us? All the way to the Tranquiline Halls?

I can't wait.

One of the reasons I love Sanderson so much is that he tracks his writing progress on his blog so you never feel like you've been forgotten (I'm looking at you Rothfuss!) He also likes to write smaller side books during and in between his large epics like WoR. As of right now, he is 50% done with the 3rd draft of Firefight (his super"hero" series) so I could see that coming out by fall.

I believe he has also said that he should be releasing SLA book every one and half years or so.

I loved the final moments with Lopen! I laughed so hard. I actually have pretty high hopes for the king once Lopen's mother is done with him.

Personally I really hope that Adolin and Shallan work out and that Kaladin relationship with Shallan was just Sanderson building legitimately human relationships. People aren't so cut and dry as most books tend to make them.
Also, it's about time someone "delivered" a blade to Sadeas, storming man deserved it so many times over.

I loved the arena scene, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for Kaladin to jump in, I was a little worried because he was one of his "dark" phases.

I love the different factions, though it may get a little hard to keep track of them later. I am very interesting in finding out more about the faction that Gavilar was a part of and how Amaram is involved with it.

I'm noticing that Sanderson uses mostly descriptions when he has character visit another Cosmere world.

Oh my goodness, I feel like an idiot that this just clicked for me, but I'm kind of giddy with excitement over that revelation.
Also, the next book would be about Szeth like this book was about Shallan.

Re-reading it now. Got to admit, wow I am soooo thick-headed because I totally missed all the beautiful foreshadowing in the early chapters about both Kaladin and Moash. Who was the only person who wouldn't get the tattoo for freedom on his forehead? Moash. Because his old prejudices and hatreds still have him imprisoned. And Kaladin? "Guess the scars aren't finished with me yet." Guess not. Sill "shash" still "dangerous" still a slave, for most of the book, just like Moash.

Will say this, as my teen ager would say "Kaladin and Shallan? Yeah, I ship it." [Big Grin] They are just WAYyYYY too keyed up when around each other and their meeting was so charged and then that emotional sharing and bonding in the chasm. Kaladin telling her stuff he admitted he has never told anyone. Shallan confessing to him...these two are made for each other. Gonna be so interesting since Syl can't stand Pattern's kind!

Anybody else getting a distinct darkside/Sith vibe from Adolin's actions at the end? That boy is giving in to the dark side of the force. He's too prideful...and when he learns that his father, brother, betrothed, and bodyguard are all radiants and he isn't....his jealousy and pride will be his downfall.

It caught me off-guard because I was extrapolating from the Windrunners. It also seems to contradict "life before death" and "journey before destination".

As a special treat today, Brandon Sanderson has chosen to release one of the interludes that didn't make the final cut for Words of Radiance.

Interesting implications, assuming it's actually canon.

Finished WoR a little while back. I have to admit I was a little lost for the first half of the book or so, since I only read Way of Kings once, and that was during a distracted weekend in 2010, so I forgot a lot of the smaller characters. Still really enjoyed it. I'm rereading Way of Kings now, and it's a strange feeling, getting the "ohhh, so that's who that guy is!" vibe every few pages. It's sort of like having all the big surprises happen in reverse. [Smile]

I figured that would be my experience as well so I went ahead and re-read WoK about a month before WoR came out, then read TOR.com's catch-up piece that basically listed all the major characters and briefly described what they were doing at the end of WoK. It really helped me get up to speed.

Just finished Way of Kings over the weekend and started Words of Radiance. Since I know the next Formic Wars book is coming out on June 10, I'm reading on a deadline, which should help me finish WoR more quickly than I did WoK. [Wink]

I don't know why I feel stupid for admitting this, but I just don't have the same appreciation for Sanderson's storytelling style that I do for OSC's. I suppose part of it is that many, if not most, of OSC's books are geared towards younger readers, which makes them a little easier to understand. I just seem to enjoy reading OSC's works more, because I feel like I can sit down and "enjoy" them, rather than concentrating to make sure I'm not missing anything I should have gotten in the last chapter. I can read through almost any OSC book in a few days, while it takes significantly longer for me to plow through a Sanderson book.

I suppose Sanderson has more subtlety and complexity woven into his worlds, which makes me want to read the books more slowly to make sure I capture everything. I also had a lot of trouble really getting into WoK... it seemed like I was 500 or 600 pages into the book before I really felt invested in any character at all. By the end, of course, I was gasping along with everyone else at Shallan's "deep truth" and Kaladin's... well, to avoid spoilers, let's just say his "experiences."

The only other Sanderson book I've read is Elantris, and that book definitely follows the same general motif (slow world-building early on, then lots of fast action in the last quarter of the book). I did really like Elantris by the end, however, and I picked up WoR, so I guess I liked WoK, too, didn't I? [Smile]

One of the reasons I'm really looking forward to WoR, though, is that some of the most basic components of Roshar have already been thoroughly introduced, so I can focus more on the characters and less on things like, "Spren? What the heck is that?" and "Shinovar? Alethkar? Jah Keved? Are those things places or something?")

If Elantris is the only other Sanderson book you've read besides the Stormlight Archive books, you're selling yourself short. It was his first and his writing has gotten better with each new work released. If you're willing to commit to a series, read the Mistborn trilogy. If you want something that will be a quicker read, I'd recommend The Rithmatist (the plan is for one or two books to follow it, but it's got a set ending so it's not a huge cliffhanger). It came out about a year ago and is a great YA book.

Thanks! I'll add the Mistborn trilogy to my post-Earth-Awakens-pre-Visitors reading list. [Smile]

Also, try Legion. It's quick read with lots of action. Probably my favorite book in the last few years.
