I swear I have seen some of you during the brief three month I myself have been here... You are not spam bots, so there must be a reason for you to be here.
And I am sure I've missed some. Aaand there are a quite a few lurking.
I would like to meet you. No requirements. No strings attached.

The best way to improve is to surround yourself with people who are better at it.
You are never too old to be tolerant.
Do not regret growing older. It’s a privilege denied to many.
The happiness of our life depends upon the quality of our thoughts.
Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. And inevitable.
Don’t judge someone just because they sin differently than you.
Each day comes with 86,400 seconds. Tick tock.
I may not be perfect but most animals instinctively love me.
The trouble with books is that they make sense. Reality never makes sense.
I read fiction because "since public religion has been [...] replaced by weak substitutes, fiction remains as a source of moral and causal truth."Posts: 366 | Registered: May 2016

A goal without a plan is ...not going to happen. The best way to improve is to ... be humble and do iterative versions. You are never too old to ...become who you want to be. Obstacles are ...opportunities to grow in ways you didn't wish to have to. Don’t judge someone just because ...they haven't read Ender's Game yet. Each day ...ends for everyone. I have not included the merry reptile in my "call" because he had recently returned by himself. At a post count of 4548 and with a registration date of May 09, 2001, he certainly would have qualified.

Kat, I'm gonna talk to you here for old time's sake. In this little box. And my post count will increase by 1 for the first time in....many years.
Thanks for bringing up some fun memories with your outreach, PanaceaSanans. Have fun drawing out your lurkers and good luck!!

I didn't dare apply the term to myself or the other new ones... In my mind it holds so much more meaning than "Hatrackers". Feels like it has to be earned...
And your answers are great. But...

Eh. You're here. You earned it.

All these resurrected threads have inspired a question from me for forum members here, but I didn't really think it was worth a new thread, so I will post it here.
I've been a member of this forum since 2006, but I was actually also I member of the Hatrack forum back in the AOL days, and when the migration to hatrack.com occurred, it took several years for me to bother registering again. Unfortunately, because of this, I missed out on Hatrack's golden years.
But back in 1995 or so, I was active on the Hatrack River 1830's forum. My character's name was Kieran Singer. He was a young man who owned a guitar, and sat around the town occasionally singing songs. My character fell in love with a young girl character named Miz Teek, whose mother (character name escapes me) owned the town's bathhouse. Miz Teek also had a younger sister (character name also escapes me) who was maybe 11 years old.
Did anyone else here participate in the 1830's forum back then? Who were your characters?

And what happened to Kieran and Miz Teek (mystique)?

It turned out that Miz Teek and family were a family of mermaids, and in an interesting incident, they disappeared one day into the river. Miz Teek never said goodbye. Kieran walked into the woods and smashed his guitar against a tree, and disappeared.

I am a lurker/ occasional poster from way back. Big mouth lion anyone? For a long time one of my favorite brags was that OSC himself had actually responded to a post I made in a discussion of why he would never try to actually write The Hive Queen and the Hegemon. I had a very brief involvement in both Battle School and 1830s, marked mostly by some really awful writing. I would drift away for months or years at a time but would check back in occasionally and would briefly flirt with being an active poster. I would find myself feeling extremely jealous of the obviously very real and deep friendships that always seemed to drive this community and would fantasize about being a bigger part or about how cool it would have been to have not missed out on wench con or the hatrack gift exchange and the like. I wanted Bob to think I was funny, and Tom to think I was smart, or to write the coolest landmark thread or to be invited to Moose and Squirrels for thanksgiving. Alas, through a combination of immaturity, laziness, inhibition, bad timing, and a massive inferiority complex focused entirely on what other people think of me, I never managed to make that jump from lurker. Panacea, I am truly in awe of what you have managed here. I have thought many times about how cool it would be if someone did this, and you just went and did it. So thank you. And to everyone else, thank you for being an important part of my life in lots of good and bad times even though you had no idea you were. I'm here for real now and I'm going to give it the real try it deserved all those times I didn't.
A goal without a plan is way more fun until two weeks before the deadline. The best way to improve is to be able to recognize the good ideas so you can steal them. You are never too old to find Legos awesome. Do not regret the failures more than the missed opportunities. The happiness of our life depends upon Fritos and bean dip. Obstacles are a good chance to practice your procrastination. Don’t judge someone just because they did something wrong. Unless you are a judge. Then do. Each day is a good day for donuts. Except Monday. The place with the drive through is closed on Mondays. I may not be perfect. The trouble with books is that the good ones always end and the bad ones never do. I read fiction because it lights a fire under my creativity muscles.

Welcome, ElCheeko. I am so glad you decided to take part! One less missed opportunity to regret later. From the few but well-shaped and considerate posts you have made I think you'll be an asset to Hatrack. And you probably know quite a bit more about everybody than I do.^^
Speaking of knowing:

I would very much love to hear what his answer was.
And you are a teacher, I take it? What do you teach?

In response to his position that he wouldn't try to write a book that supposedly changed all of humanity and its outlook on life for the same reason that he rejected the guys who wanted to write an opera based on songmaster, i.e. That it was impossible to write music that would make someone rip their entrails out, I made a smartass comment about Bryan Adams doing that regularly. He told me I made a good point.
I teach high school speech, debate, and drama.

I was wondering whether he had made that argument himself...
That is also pretty much why I could never be satisfied with any musical adaptation of the "Phantom of the Opera", and why there are some books that I would not have turned into movies for he life of me.

I wish my school had taught that!

Right now it looks like we'll be somewhere else for Thanksgiving, but if we end up staying home you're more than welcome to join us. Or just about any other night, for that matter. Just let us know when you'll be in town and with enough notice we can probably work around anything else we have going on.

CT, it is absolutely astonishing to me (and objectively wrong) that we've never met in person.

Wow, that was easy. I should have tried attention seeking whininess much earlier. Thank you so much for the kind offer. I think it would be incredible to meet you and a lot of jatraqueros eventually. Currently, my wife finds it very cute how excited I am to reconnect with my younger, (slightly) nerdier self. I'll give her some time to acclimate before I broach going off to meet weird people from the internet.

A goal without a plan is ... a lottery ticket. The best way to improve is to ... to ignore the excuses and don't blame, just focus on doing it yourself. You are never too old to ... be childish. Do not regret ... what you haven't done, rejoice in what you have. The happiness of our life depends upon ... our willingness to accept it, not compare it. Obstacles are ... larger in our imagination and fear than in reality. Don’t judge someone just because ... they are not you. Each day ... is for you to make wonderful I may not be perfect but ... I am beautiful. The trouble with books is that ... I don't own them all, yet. I read fiction because ... I have to. Its an addiction.
