Open Discussions About Writing
We discuss general topics on writing here. If you want volunteers to give you feedback on your story, please go to one of the Fragments and Feedback areas or to the Nonfiction area.
Fragments and Feedback for Short Works
Need volunteers to look at your short work? This is the place to ask for them. Start a topic and give it the title of your story or essay or article. Give the genre (SF, fantasy, mystery, nonfiction, whatever), tell us how many words you have written so far, and whether you just want feedback on the 13 lines or volunteers to read the whole thing. Then post the first 13 lines. Please do not post more than the first 13 lines of your work in any topic here at Hatrack.
Fragments and Feedback for Books
Need volunteers to look at your book? This is the place to ask for them. Start a topic and give it the title of your book. Give the genre (SF, fantasy, mystery, nonfiction, whatever), tell us how many words you have written so far, and whether you just want feedback on your first 13 lines and/or a summary of your book, or whether you want volunteers to read a partial (the first 20 pages and an outline of the rest). Then post the first 13 lines of your book and/or a short summary (think of it as what you'd put in a query letter). Please do not post more than the first 13 lines or a short summary of your work in any topic here at Hatrack. This also a good place to post your planned queries/synopses/summaries for feedback. Also, you can post the first 13 lines from other chapters as you go along, but please do it with one topic per chapter and label the topic with the book title and chapter number.
Discussing Published Hooks & Books
Topics here can start with a 13-line quote from the start of a published work and discuss what works and doesn't work about the opening. Or they can be for discussion of other aspects of published books.
Hatrack Writers - Publications & Reviews
Let us know if you've been published and where we can find copies of your work. Also, let us know about reviews of your work so we can read what others have said.
Hatrack Groups
Post here if you want to start a Hatrack Group, if your group needs new members, or if you want existing groups to know you are available to join.
Writing Challenges
Here is where you post the first 13 lines of your submission to the latest writing challenge and ask for feedback on those lines and/or the whole story. This is also where other writing challenges, such as Liberty Hall, can be announced.
Grist for the Mill
This is for topics where we share the good and bad things that happen in our lives that don't particularly have to do with writing. Who knows? It might give you or someone else a story idea. It is NOT for polemic of any kind.
Character Interviews
Create a topic for your character and give a description, then as others ask your character questions, you can answer them as if you were the character. We hope this will help you get to know your character better.
Special Hatrack Topics
These are special topics that have been fun and/or useful to Hatrack participants in the past. Making them available to current Hatrack participants.
