In the era of around 1500, what kind of clothing did people wear? Could someone provide me with some good web links?

Thanks.

You didn't mention the locale you're interested in...

I recommend you consider looking at the works of the great artists of the time - like Da Vinci, Hans the Younger, etc. - plus read through some of the literature of the time period for telling tidbits.

I've bought a lot reference books from Dover Publications through the years. Check out http://store.doverpublications.com/fashion-and-costumes.html

Here you'll find books detailing English costume from early Middle Ages through the 16th century, plus a history of underclothing, and even clothes from Ancient times to the 20th century. Prices are very reasonable.

To view costumes online, I've used the following link quite a bit just to browse and study the plates. (Keep in mind that these plates were gathered/created during the years 1861 through 1880, so they have a "Victorian perspective" to them. But I think they're terrific and give a good look across the board at different levels of society.)

You'll find it at:
http://www.siue.edu/COSTUMES/COSTUME1_INDEX.HTML

Also look at:
http://www.costumegallery.com/1500.htm

And for a launch pad to other links, try:
http://www.costumes.org

Great stuff - especially about colors and what dyes people had access to....

Hi! One group with a lot of research in this area would be the Society for Creative Anachronism. I used to be a member - still have my plate armor.

Anyway, I went to their site (www.sca.org), hit "Arts and Sciences" - the following should take you to the page of topics - pick Clothing and Costumes on the left. The links are arranged in different ways including century, which should help. They say the page is undergoing a major overhaul, so some links may not work...

http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/topics.htm

Some articles are on how to make things but many are on the clothing from different cultures and time periods. Have fun reading!

Lee
