I've been lurking around for a while reading through a lot of the old discussions getting to know all the regulars, and thought it was time I came out of hiding and introduced myself.

I'm Nellie Vrolyk, and you can see I use my real name for username. That's so I don't forget who I am ;-) and at the very ripe old age of 58 I am certain I am the oldest person on this board. I live in the western side of Canada.

I just finished the first draft of a 100,000 word science fiction novel. It is not my first piece of writing as I have been writing stories throughout most of my life. But I haven't written anything for many years and am just now getting back into the swing of it.

I've also signed up for a group and am patiently waiting for one to form.

Welcome to the forum! There a quite a few of us 'oldsters' around, so don't feel too ancient I am 52 and fairly new at this myself. Good luck on the group....it is awesome to have a group of people with whom you can discuss your work.

Thank you for the nice welcomes.

Marianne, now I don't feel quite so old :-)

I signed up for one of the workshops on this site last week and was told it would take a while before there is a group for me. I'm patient. And it gives me time to work on my novel and begin on the second draft. I can't wait to get some good constructive feedback on it.

And if anyone would like a look at the first chapter, feel free to ask and I will send.

So many people responded when I asked for a critique, I wouldn't be a very nice person if I didn't do the same. Send it over to chrisg83@hotmail.com, with HATRACK CRITIQUE as the subject. (Every name not on my list is automatically transfered to the trash file, and unless I fish it out myself, it gets deleated. The subject heading would make it easier to spot.)

Chris.

Welcome, Nellie,
Well, you beat me by three years. Maybe you and Marianne and I'll start the Wise Ones faction of Hatrack. I won't say Senior because Wise Ones sounds more SciFi. (Just how wise we are is questionable, but it sure sounds good. )

You didn't say what type of story: SF, fantasy...?

Okay, now that I've finished throwing up at the implications for what we are including as science fiction....

Kolona, my story in progress is science fiction. Did I not mention that? The story takes place in a very large alien spaceship, so I guess that makes it SF.

How about a Grand Elders faction? The Wise Ones is too much Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time series. Which I'm reading right now for the first time and my opinion on the series is not favourable.

Hello Survivor :-)

I just sent the first chapter off to all who have requested it. Be tough in your critiques. I need to know what I'm not seeing in what I have written.

Thank you for being willing to look. And I'm willing to return the favour -I love reading for one thing, and for another I need practice doing critiques. I've never really done any to tell the truth :-)

Yes, yes. Grand Elders. The Wise Ones was only a first thought, which of course is usually best discarded.

Survivor, you must learn never to throw up at your elders. (Although your "wording" was rather good. It bespoke the action quite well.)

SF? Great. I'll take a look, Nellie. Send it on down. (I just had to make sure. I'm getting a little fantasy-shy. )

When I ask you to do mine, you'd better tell the truth.

My apologies, Grand Elder. I should have turned aside, but I am less than agile when on my knees heaving my guts out

By the way, Nellie, I'll critique your chapter if you like.

Just now picked up your chapter, Nellie. No electricity here for 3 days. Didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.

Thanks for letting me know Kolona. No electricity for three days... ouch! I'd go bonkers with boredom and my story notebook would be scribbled full of ideas and changes to the story.
