This may have been asked before but I was doing some net-surfing and found a contest to a small, independant publisher called Ghost Road Press out of Denver. It got me thinking about these types of publishers. Is there anyway to do some sort of reference check, or legitimacy check on these publishers? Is there anyway to know or find out what their publishing power is, such as how large a distribution they have, what kind of advertising power they have, etc?
My questions tend towards worrying about not so much will they accept me, so much as if they did, would my book ever sit on a book shelf for anyone to see?

It does help with one aspect of what I need. I learned a few things, call them red flags, to look for when dealing with publishers and agents. Thanks, Mike!

When it comes to smaller publishers, you may have to do a lot leg work yourself. Ask the publisher for a list of authors they publish; call to some of your local bookstores and ask if they carry books from that publisher; you may be able to contact authors already with the house.
