So I recently picked up "The Hard SF Renaissance," essentially a collection of Kick-Ass short science fiction stories.

The best one in the collection(ive only read about 3/4 so far) is Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress.

If you can find a copy of this story, Get it. read it.

Basically, its about how genetherapy is used on children and the ability to be "sleepless" is imparted to children. Fascinating read.

Theres a number of other Amazing stories in this book, but so far thats the best.

I remember reading that story years ago, likely when it was first published and found it to be fascinating.

Two years ago I attended a writer's con where Kress was in attendance and gave a brief talk on plot creation.

Far too short, but excellent.

I read the novel. It was fascinating, but a bit overlong (I suspect it showed its short story origins).

Kress' "beginnings, middles and ends" is one of the classics on my bookshelve of "how to write books".

I have that one, as well as her "Creating Dynamic Characters," both are excellent reads, now only if I could be better at applying what I have learned...
