Hey guys. This is my first post here. I was looking for some feedback on a character development for a novel I'm working on called Lord's Rendezvous.

Emerald Yohanson

Emerald Yohanson, a wealthy diamond import/export operator out of Johannesburg, South Africa, has long been heralded as one of the most connected deaf people in the world. A long time operator, she couriers her south African diamonds far and wide "at basement level" prices, as a front for her illegal Nazi confiscated diamonds ring. A dieing gift of her father, this stash of diamonds is one of the rarest and most sought after stashes in the world and has made her quite a wealthy woman.

In an effort to keep costs down and protect her diamonds, Emerald smuggles all diamonds herself, yet they are never found in her clothes or luggage. A former sword swallower for Galleon Gaston's traveling circus, she has been known to swallow several pounds of contraband at any given moment given her keen control of her gag reflex developed while circus traveling.

It is this reflex which the followers at Lord's wish to wrangle for the professional smuggling of illegal propaganda, and she found the address to Lord's as she anally expelled a package of diamonds to find that one was a fake, and in its place, had left a small scroll containing the address of Lord's.

Standing at 5 foot 8 inches, she is taller than many of the Dutch men in South Africa, quite beautiful with sunny blonde hair, and has always used this as a way to attract men in order to cow them into satisfying her insatiable urge for having each of her fingers bent back to almost breaking point. In some circles she is known as "Ears", both for their large size and apparent disfunctionality. Never learning sign language, she employs a small boy, nick named Scribbles, who does her translating and never leaves her side. They communicate by a method of back cursive, in which the one writes, in cursive, on the others back, having the appearance of continual back messaging during long conversations.

Let me know what you guys think.

She certainly sounds like an interesting character. I would think that method of communication would be quite slow, though, which might be a problem. It would make using her viewpoint quite tricky, because she probably wouldn't be able to keep track of an ordinary conversation; it would have to be summarised to her, rather than relayed in detail, which would seem quite odd to the reader.

Welcome nacho45

Certainly she sounds interesting, and you have put some thinking into this. The following thoughts occurred to me:

- is the time period during WWII, or afterwards? This matters...
- swallowing contraband is not an unusual method of smuggling - depending on the time period, if she is suspected of doing this, I think she could be caught fairly easily. Your reasoning makes sense (the circus thing), though several pounds of diamonds sounds like a lot - especially to swallow at the last minute - hard to suspend disbelief for.
- The gag reflex is just to get them down, not to bring them back up I assume given the whole pooping-them-out point. Police have been known to keep suspected criminals (like those who swallow engagement rings in stores) until the evidence 'presents itself' so to speak.
- If they are her diamonds, from her father, then how does she end up with some fake diamond containing a message from a group called 'Lord' - unless she is also smuggling for others, but that was not mentioned.
- Don't quite understand the masochism regarding her fingers, and don't understand why she doesn't learn sign language. Seems like she could USE it in her line of work. She could still have 'Scribbles' and do the back cursive thing (my sisters and I used to play a game of writing words on each others' backs and we had to figure out what it was - it is slow but doable).
- If her ears are really big, would that detract from her being 'quite beautiful' or is it in spite of her ears... or maybe her hair covers them?

I'm sure you plan to do much more work on this, but it was interesting enough for me to read the whole thing!

Thanks for the response. Some good points posed.

This is supposed to take place post WWII. Probably mid-late 60s.

She smuggles all kinds of diamonds, not just her fathers. I should explain that better.

The one random diamond is part of the setup for plot. She has no clue how it got there.

Basically, the plot line leads a group of similarly odd misfits to a tavern called Lord's Rendezvous, where they all summoned for their radical and different ideas of revolution. So I have all the characters arriving at Lord's in a bizarre way, and that was hers. She found the odd diamond with the info, but isn't sure how it got there (as she ate it), so she goes to find out.

Thanks for the tips!

The first thing I thought of when I saw that name was the actress Scarlet Johanson. Probably not a real concern, but thought I'd mention it.
