Hi folks. I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I'll place it here anyway. In January I will take a post as Creative Director as Dog Horn Publishing, and one of the first things I've decided to do is to create a new anti-pop culture magazine, featuring alternative lit, commentary and criticism, with a dash of art thrown in too. The magazine's called Polluto, and there's further info below.
As we are looking for submissions, I've decided to give you guys the first shot, as the submission guidelines won't appear on the website for another week or so yet. If anyone wants to submit, just put HATRACK in the subject line, and I'll make sure your work gets read ahead of the slush pile. You can message me for full submission guidelines.
POLLUTO MAGAZINE
Why Polluto? Good question! When it came to brainstorming a new magazine from Dog Horn, we started off saying ‘Pluto’ but ended up saying ‘Pollution’, with the result being the odd portmanteau Polluto. And we decided that was perfect for the type of journal we wanted to produce.
The Pluto bit regards other planets, cosmic ideas—things that are out of this world. The Pollution refers to gritty, edgy, urban realism, and the dissemination of alternative perspectives—an intellectual pollution, if you will. Together, with the resultant oddity of the name, Polluto will be home to strange tales of junkies, parasites, dragons, aliens, prostitutes, mermaids and battered housewives who change into wolves at night-time. But it will also be a space for anti-pop culture of all kinds, ranging from political articles to opinion pieces to literary essays.
We will publish fiction, with a dark or surreal twist; poetry, with a modern, razor-sharp edge; reviews, interviews and non-fiction with a sardonic or perverse slant; and finally contemporary theory, such as postmodernism, postcolonialism, queer theory, or alternative criticism.
Polluto will primarily be an e-zine, distributed by email as a .pdf, but we will also make it available via Print-on-Demand through Lulu.com, in both B&W and full-colour versions. This makes the magazine more affordable to our customers and to us (I'm printing everything at Dog Horn from my own measly writer's income). However, we have a dedicated team of volunteers and professionals, so the quality of the magazine can be assured. As with all our projects, we strive for excellence and individuality.
Cheers
Adam
