I taught a creative writing course earlier this year in a middle school and got a crop of really good stories at the end of it.

Particularly, one stood out head and shoulders above the best, beating out many stories I've read by high school students (and even some of my own earlier work in 11th grade). What shocked me is that the story was written by a 6th grader, and it was very well put together.

I want to enter the story in a contest on her behalf (or sponsored through the school), but I don't know where to look. My first thought was the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (from which I won an award in high school), but the entry requirements are for 7-12 grades.

Is there anything open to 6th graders, by any chance, that any knows about? It's really a family story with a science fiction element, so that also limits its placement options.

Any ideas?
