I can't remember if this has been brought up before, and I'm just curious: has anyone else on this forum signed up for NaNoWriMo?

On a whim I could not resist, I've just registered for the insanity today, though this may be one of the worst possible times to divert my focus...

I figured this was the last resort to giving my writing a good kick in the backside. I'm sick of coming up with version after version of a first chapter.

I've lost my mind. Wish me luck.

Wow. You like doing crazy things the hard way, don't you? You're already eleven days late into the writing month. Good luck and good writing. Or at least fast writing. Let us know how it goes.

Okay, I'll bite. What in the blue blazes is a NaNoWriMo? Isn't that what Mork from Orc used to say?

I had no idea either, so I looked it up: National Novel Writing Month (see nanowrimo.org). It's a challenge to write a 50,000 word novel from November 1st to 30th. They practically insist that the writing quality be not so great -- they're just saying lay it all on the line and write until you cross the finish line. Don't edit, don't second guess; just write. Seems like a good kick-in-the-pants exercise.

Boot Camp 2001ers did a 60K-word novel in 60 days challenge July 15th-September 15th. I started in on it but was distracted by wedding, moving, and litigation, so I won't hit 60,000 words until literally about tonight. Only one or two of us finished in the allotted time, but several of us got well started.

Good luck, Tamalynn!

Luc

Kolona, I know I'm unlikely to hit 50,000 words, starting this late. So I'm shooting for about 40,000.

And suddenly, I'm all edgy and hyper for no good reason...

Here's the "What is NaNoWriMo" link, to make things easier:

C'mon. Anyone else feeling crazy?

1,050 words. I'm slow. Brain numb, despite trying to turn it off while I let my fingers type. I have nothing intelligent to say. I need sleep. It's going to be a long month...or not long enough, whichever way you see it.

This is a forum, not a weblog, so I'll stop the rambling here. <grins>

Hoo boy, I'm losing coherent thought...

Do you think this is how all those prolific writers got started?

Awwwwwwwww, maaaaaaaaaaan!!!

I wish I'd known about this earlier. It's a little too late now, I think, but hey, that only means I have a head start for next year, right?

Okay, I did it.

Despite it being almost two weeks into November, and therefore two weeks behind everyone else, I've signed up and am now commited to finishing a 50K novel by November 30th. Should I fail, I will be disgraced in front of my friends and family and will give writing forever, dismissing it as yet another failed experiment in my so-called life.

Chris

PS. Ummmm, just kidding.

Just kidding about the failure promises or about joining to write the 50K?

I just realized. Those who do this can brag, "Hey, I did a 50K." People will think they're real athletes instead of keyboard nerds.

cvgurau. I knew I recognized that name on the participant list.

Well, you're not the only late entry. People are still signing up at this point. And you're only 2 days behind me (and the paltry 2,000 words I've managed to hit in that time). Good luck!

Um, kidding about the failure promises.

I think.

Good luck to you too, Tamalynn. Hope you make it. Come to think of it, I hope I make it too.

Chris

Believe me, 50K is a lot easier than 50 thousand words.

Or, don't believe me. They're your carpals, after all.

I didn't sign up for it--no need. In 32 days I wrote 73,000 words. So it can be done. And those 73,000 words are pretty good, most of them keepers.

JK, I am still amazed myself. I have never written anything so fast. The last book 75,000 words first draft took 4 months, the one before it 190,000 words took 9 months. The one before that 325,000 words took a year, so my normal average is some where around 25,000 a month give or take.

Will the next one go as fast? No idea. But one can only hope.

Shawn

So whatever happened to the two crazy hatrackers who tried this? How did it go?

JP (who is looking back over the topics of the last thrid of a year to see what he's missed)
