Hi. New here. I have written as a hobby for a while but looking to improve in hopes of getting published.

My past efforts have been mostly erotica and, of course, I have no intention of reposting them here. Well, except for perhaps the very tamest.

I am told that I can write, but I'm assuming all the people on American Idol are told that they can sing ... Anyhow, I really want to do better.

When people here are feeling discourage and unsure of their abilities, what do they do to renew optimism?

The other question is what sort of music does everyone listen to when actively writing? I try very hard to match the music to the mood of the story I'm working on.

i always listen to japanese music when at the computer, and i do my writing at the computer... therefore i believe it follows naturally that i listen to japanese music while writing

no, i'm not japanese, and as far as i'm aware i have no japanese ancestry. i just have a major obsession with japanese

anyways! i forgot to welcome you in to the family! hope you learn much and hope we can learn much from you. there are some "romance" topics floating around here somewhere that someone with experience in erotica might be able to give good input on.

i've been told that i write well... while it is true that i write, i'm not so sure on the "well" part of the statement yet

how do i renew optimism... well, i don't, it just comes and goes as it pleases, when it comes i shovel out several pages of work, and when it's not there i struggle through a few pages anyways.

Welcome, MichelleAnn!

When I get discouraged it is usually because I haven't written in a while. So I drag my lazy carcass over to the computer to find a flash challenge and just sit there and do it.

Did that last night, it was fun and I am encouraged.

Hope to see some of your writing.

I've found I can't listen to music when I write. I can get inspired by music -- there are even some stories I've written that have been based on songs I've heard -- but that's before and after. During never works for me.

Wish it did, though.

Oops, forgot the first question.

When I get discouraged, I take a break for a day or two from writing. Usually, I read during that time, or focus more on my family and quite often I visit the library. I'll check out a book on whatever strikes my fancy at the moment, read it, and usually whatever I've found in that brief vacation inspires me enough to go back to work.

Welcome, Michelle!

Erotica, huh? Believe it or not, I have a suggestion for a way to learn how to write and to get even the least tame parts of those stories looked at...http://writersvillage.com/. They charge a flat fee for a year of classes from basics to the finishing touches. Grammar, punctuation, characters, plot, fiction, non fiction, poetry, and there is even an erotica course that includes on-line feedback.

Anyway, I listen to the sounds of silence when I wrte. Music distracts me.

I can't concentrate either when listening to music, or the TV is going, or somebody is talking. I must have total quiet.

Dpatridge,
What Japanese CD's do you recommend?
I've one I played to death last year. It had "Along the Grand Tone River" and two other pieces I really loved.

Hi Michelle. Welcome aboard!

I don't usually listen to music either, but for one of my current works I did. I listened to lots of middle eastern music, just to get into the mood of the culture.
I would like to know about the Japenese CDs too. Are they just music.

While we are on the topic, does anyone know the name of those oriental girls who play rock music with traditional instruments? I heard one song by them, while at a chinese place, but didn't catch the name of the group.

I almost always listen to music or nature sounds. I find it important to "coccoon." Basically I create my own artificial environment.

It helps when you know I have lots of pets and a husband and so I need to block them out in order to get into my zone.

Thank you for the suggestion on the site. I'll check it out; I do post my erotica to a site and I receive feedback through that method.

Post something for critique. The community here is supportive and while they can be brutally honest, they also let you know when you are improving or if a piece has potential. The people here are also really good at brainstorming. When you're stuck, it doesn't take much to get the juices flowing from the people here.

This varies for me. Sometimes I like silence (otherwise I start singing along and don't actually write anything ). Other times it is nice to put on music that fits with what I'm writing. Lately I've been working on a high energy project, so I've been listening to some James Bond Soundtrack stuff and '80s hair bands.

welcome:

I also like to listen to japanese(I think it's japanese) music, but I doubt you'd find the ones I listen to on a CD, I stole them from a Majjong game. It rests my mind so I can focus.

surprising how many people want to hear my opinion on Japanese music. just the other day on SFFnet on IRC someone asked for my opinion... I mainly listen to J-Fan radio, it plays a great selection of all the newest stuff and some older stuff too, it's servers are based in California, so it doesn't lag so much as the ones coming out of Tokyo.

the website is j-fan.com/radio

i do also have the rudiments of a collection starting, based on my own preferences of course. my collection includes m-flo, B'z, globe, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Utada Hikaru to name a few.

i highly recommend that you avoid "anime" collections, they get either extremely repetitive or extremely jarring.

believe it or not, B'z does some really great lyrical work. no, i mean it. whoever it is that writes B'z lyrics knows both their English and Japanese EXTREMELY well, and they have a fine grasp of literary techniques to make you "feel" the music.

go listen to ARIGATO or Love Phantom, both are great examples of what i'm talking about with B'z (and both are in my collection)

m-flo has their own lyricist as well, but are more rap than rock. they do some great work too (my two favorite Japanese songs are miss you from m-flo and ARIGATO from B'z, at first look you'd think there's huge differences between them, one being rock, the other rap, but they really aren't that different, except for the variations of uniqueness that every band or group has)

as for a group that does rock music using japanese traditional instruments, well, almost all japanese groups will toss in traditional instruments with the modern electronica with certain songs, but you are probably thinking of a member group of the Hello! Project, or a spinoff from old members since graduated
