Hello, I am trying to write a new short story so I decided to use names from Greek mythology so I went to the Wikipedia website and looked up the names, I was trying to pick less common ones but I think these fit nicely I picked the names Prometheus and Pandora but I want to change them so they are different but sound slightly more modern.

P.S. if this is the wrong place for this please move or delete this thread

Well, it's tough on readers to have two characters whose names start with the same letter, especially when the names are from the same culture. So there's a starting place for you--change the starting letter of one of them.

Another thing you can do is invest in a baby name book. I have one (my mom flipped out when I bought it--she thought I was pregnant, and at the time I was only sixteen... that was an interesting experience) and I use it all the time. If you're not willing to fork out the cash, baby name websites are all over the place, and they can give you more modern versions of different names.

Lol, normaly i would change the first letter of the name but one of the characters will be only in it in a few parts despite the importance of the character i could probly change the other one though but since pandoa is just a program i am going to keep that name the way it is. thanks alot for the book idea, I'll definately look into it.

If anyone wants the plot of the story just ask.

Why names from Greek myth? Is it relevant to the story?

www.behindthename.com

Shall I repeat?

www.behindthename.com

It is THE single best website (IMO) on name research on the web. It sorts by culture, including ancient cultures, and beginning letter. Includes meanings of names and multiple spellings.

I used the very same site. It yielded very good results.

I'm also in the process of writing a Greek mythologic tale as well, and I'll repeat what dakota said: It is the best site to use(IMO).

What is the synopsis of yours?
(Crosses fingers in hope of not having idea taken)

I tend to just come up with my own names, but I do base a few off of Biblical names. When I do that, however, I rearrange and add some letters until I have something I like. "Shelumel," for instance, came from the Old Testament (Numbers, I think, but I'm not sure). This is a simple one, though--the original name was "Shelumiel." I took out one letter. Most of the time, it's more complicated. Sometimes I spell the name backward and sometimes I replace some letters with others and move them around. (Such is the case with the name "Néathaas," the name of the antagonist in one of my stories. See if you can figure out what the original name was. I'll bet you can hardly tell.)

Anyway, the same idea might work for you, if you want to go that route. Just pick some of the Greek names you like and play with the arrangement of the letters or the spelling until you get something that you like (and still sounds Greek, if that's what you're going for).

Well, I would like to say, "Close," but considering the name I took it from, it would be...strange to say that in the least. It's a name belonging to a certain Biblical character. I added a few letters, but if you take out 3 and rearrange the rest, that should give you the answer. And just so you know, it's the name of a pretty well-known Biblical character. Many people who've never even read the Bible should at least recognize the name of this..."person."

Note: I also did not change any letters, just added and rearranged.

I have decide to change the name of them main character whose was going to be Prometheus but I am keeping Pandora exactly the same because in the story this program (the character is a program) real purpose is to restore fear and insecurity and all that "good" stuff to humanity. the only reason I picked Prometheus is because he was a mythical character that was chained to a rock for eternity and my main character is in a way chained to his reality (well that?s what I thought when I picked the name)

Thank you for all of the advice - Matt.

Good job, TaShaJaRo! That's it exactly. Néathaas is supposed to represent the embodiment of all evil in my story, which is why I used that name and then rearranged the letters so that it wouldn't be exactly the same.

Prometheus = {this one's complicated to come up with anything "normal" sounding... you might just have to play with it and take what sounds better for you}Methes, Mathew, Rome, Rometh, Theo

Pandora = Pamila, Dora (not the explora), Andora

But Satan doesn't have a body....

Okay, just kidding.

I don't have a problem with Prometheus being combined with Pandora. But I do have a problem with any person being named Prometheus.

I go with the theory that a person's name tells you more about the giver of the name than it does about the person. Remember Lanik Mueller's horse, Hitler? I'm sure that name doesn't say anything about the horse, but it says everything about the Muellers.

Prometheus used to get his liver eaten out by a raptor each day and then since he was immortal it would grow back. The liver is the house of the bilious humor, so the obvious choice is Bill.

Pandora let every bad doo dah out of the box except hope. So you could call her hope. Or as it translated into lating, spero. You could call her Sparrow.

Didn't Prometheus create Pandora as a gift for the first man?

Bill? Bill? But that's so plain!--especially if you're planning to write a sci-fi or fantasy story. I'd think up something more interesting than that.

Sometimes the simple names are the best ones.
