If a person wanted to get a DNA test to prove or disprove the parentage of a child, where would they go? Can you do this at a hospital, a doctor's office, or do you have to go to a special clinic? Also, how long does it take?

I think it's something that can be done at the doctor's office, but I'm not sure. Or rather, they can take the sample there but then it has to go to a lab. I'm not sure where I'm pulling this idea from though.

It wouldn't hurt to call your doctor's office and ask them.

Couldn't hurt, huh?

The last time I tried to call someone to do research for a project, I called a police department to ask some questions about homicide investigation procedure. I thought it would be great, except I got all tongue-tied and embarassed and then had to explain to them that I wasn't actually calling to report a murder.

Oh well. I don't need that much in the way of details. They can send the samples wherever they want for analysis...for this I'm just curious about the patient end. Where does she go, when does she get the results? I'm hoping she can do it at her doctor's office, actually.

You would go to your doctor. He/she might have the ability to do the test at his office and send the sample to a lab, or might send you to a hospital or lab to have it done directly there.
However, if - for example - you were testing your child to see if the father was really the father, you'd have to have the father's permission to take his sample.

There are places that draw blood for procedures such as disease testing and paternity testing, because my father actually has a couple patents for the tests, but outside of a blood bank/lab, I would probably have to agree that a doctor might order the tests. Courts would too, in a dipute, I imagine.

There's a place in Phoenix I drive past all the time. Did you look in the KC phone book?

That's great information, thanks. Now I just have to figure out how the doctor is going to react to the mother wanting to check her maternity rather than the father wanting to check his paternity...

I don't know if other states do it, but VA state social services assist with that for mothers who apply to the programs like WIC and Social Security. Based on the findings, they also help the women get child support from the dads.

Friend of the Court can refer you where to go....sometimes its free.
Family Indendent Agency (FIA)..., is also a good (or bad) source depending on how you view them....
An agency I was referred to once was going to take 90 days for the results....
Finally FIA referred me to there own facility and I believe I had results in 2 to 3 weeks.

Can't they do DNA analysis from a scrape from the inside of your cheek instead of drawing blood.

On Veronica Mars they did it by mailing off hair samples to a lab, probably to some outfit like this one: http://paternitytestus.com .
