Just out of curiosity, what kind of music do you listen to, if any, when you're writing? I like to listen to old midis from videogames; they help to set the mood. Play battle music writing an intense scene, royal music writing a castle scene, whatever. How about you?

I write on the computer and since I have converted all my CD's into mp3's I listen to whatever mp3's I have Mainly System of a Down.

Usually I don't listen to anything while I'm typing, but if I'm up pacing around and creating through acting stuff out, I usually listen to certain pieces that I have earmarked for the mood they invoke. I have a "Book Playlist" on my computer, just for that purpose. Some of the pieces are sections I cropped out of longer works. All instrumental.

I can't write without music. I try to fit the mood of the piece to the mood of the music, but mostly I hit "play" on iTunes and hear what happens I mostly have folk, soft pop and world music.

I rarely get the chance to listen to my music, especially when writing, but when I do it is almost always some mournful Celtic music, often in Gaelic.
And I drink whisky. Bunnahabhain, single-malt from Islay. After a while the words flow more smoothly.

I tend to listen to any number of things, but the vast majority of what I've (a) bought on record, (b) bought on CD, and (d) recently downloaded from CD to my computer (once I realized I could do it), consists of rock-era songs running from the fifties to the early eighties. There's a lot of other stuff (there's a lot of country), but that's my era. (Right now my computer's playing "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" by the Monkees.)

Eh, I can focus on music and writing at the same time, but usually not unless it's instrumental; I try to sing along and write at the same time and end up writing something like "Tobias hefted his sword with the force of american pie, drove the chevvy to the levvy" and then hammering the delete key and closing winamp.
