I absolutely do read while I'm writing. By "while," I mean during break times. Each novel I've written has taken over a year, so I would be really long-term reading deprived if I didn't. Another trick of mine is to keep a few really poorly written novels in the house. When I'm having an attack of author insecurity, I pull one of those beauts out. I read a few pages and suddenly feel brilliant and oh, so talented.

I don't usually read right before a writing session (which is after dinner each night). But when it's late at night and my brain feels fried, I either grab a book or play a quick game of computer scrabble. Scrabble tends to break any "word block" I might have at the time, and words bubble to the surface that I haven't thought of in years.

I begin to think I'm word fixated.
