I am going to be attending Norwescon from April 13-16. Aside from the forums and presentations, I am hoping to hook up with other SF/F writers in the South Sound area. With any luck, a writer's group could result from it.

This doesn't preclude my participation in online groups. There is nothing like the possibility of getting feedback from hundreds or even thousands of widely varying viewpoints.

Just be nice to take a break and see another human face after crawling out of the basement, clutching my latest manuscript and trying to adjust to normal, ambient light shining on my monitor-tanned face.

If you are an SF/F writer and plan on attending Norwescon- let me know!

Thanks,

Snowden

Do you plan on attending all four days? Or were you just going to catch it over the weekend?

I must admit, it is my first "con", but I am looking forward to it. There appear to be tons of writing related presentations.

I got hit pretty badly during the DotCom bust. I have spent the last four years contracting or looking for a contract. I picked up SF writing as a low cost hobby.

Now that I am a gainfully employed civil servant- Norwescon is the first real "vacation" I have taken in years. Plus, it ties in very closely with my hobby.

So, I am just about as jazzed as you can get.

Two people are attending Norwescon.

This would explain why trying to put together a writing group in the South Sound has been so unfruitful. Perhaps the ability to write SF stops cold at the Pierce county line.

This would also explain my failure to get published.

Then again, it has spawned an epiphany for me. Since I live so far south of the Literate Zone, perhaps I will give up this writing nonsense and engage in the more traditional pastimes of the area.

So, take care all! I am off to buy some flannel shirts and a grocery cart of cold medicine- and something to cook it in.

bet you a dollar there will be more than two people there.

There's a strong PNW spec fic community, from what I've seen. Don't despair just because they don't hang out here.

I have discovered the existence of several SF writing groups through various sources such as Meetup.com and NWSFS. Unfortunately, all the groups I have come across are all located in the greater Seattle metro area.

Due to the high concentration of people in close proximity- putting interest groups together "in the city" is fairly simple. I have chosen the unenviable task of trying to find and unite all the SF writers from the likes of Yelm, Tenino, and Bucoda.

I do have a fallback plan. If I can't seem to find anyone around here- I will just head up to Yelm and call upon J.Z. Knight. She can channel all of my past lives- with any luck, some of my past lives were writers. I can start a group with them.

It is a long shot, but I am willing to take it. With my luck, all of my past incarnations will be pharaohs or serving girls to King Louis XIV. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Oh, I am not actually despairing just yet. I have been at this for a couple of years and I have developed an enormous capacity for dealing with setbacks.

I just want to post to this thread and keep it at the top of the forums in hopes others see it and it pays off.

If not, I will be attending almost every "writing related" presentation at Norwescon and I have my sign ready-

"Will Host Writer's Group for Critiques"

If it comes to it, I will even supply pork rinds and Dr. Pepper to attract attendees.

If nothing else, I still have a "live" critique group that I am currently attending. It is a good group, but I am the only SF writer there. I am hoping to get some people together who won't get immediately lost if they read the word "plasma" in a story.

I will be going there tonight with the first six pages of my current story. In the first paragraph I use the word "wetware"- which is going to result in a twenty minute explanation with the topic-

"Wetware- No I Am Not Referring to Diapers"

Moving into the last couple of days before Norwescon.

The time to make arrangements is now. I will quit checking this board Wednesday night. Once I get to the con, I will no longer has internet access.

Preferred goal would be putting together a writing group in the South Sound region (Olympia/Tacoma/Lacey). Failing that, just hanging out with local aspiring writers would be interesting.
