I'm toying with an idea based on japanese samurai culture but I haven't read many books about this. Can anyone recommend any good novels of this or similar genre.

Thanks

I don't know about fantasy or folk tales, but James Clavell's "Shogun" covers the culture of the early 1600s Samuri pretty well. It also has some of the best examples of action writing you'll ever read.

If you want something that will put you in the right mindset, but is still a fun read I recommend the Sano Ichiro Mysteries by Laura Joh Rowland. Watching an Akira Kurosawa film - Ran, Rashomon or Throne of Blood - should also help. If you want a text that will both inform and maintain your interest, try Samurai: The Weapons and Spirit of the Japanese Warrior by Clive Sinclaire. Goodluck!

Don't forget Kirosawa's "Seven Samurai" - an absolute classic. "Kwaidan" (Japanese for Ghost Story) is a beautiful Technicolor movie by one of Kirosawa's rivals. It's a collection of 4 or so short, well, ghost stories, set in samurai times. Yoshi the Earless is particularly good, and you'll see where John Milius got some of his visual ideas for his Conan movie.
An excellent set of fantasy books set in ancient China are Barry Huggart's adventures of Master Li and Number 10 Ox - The Story of the Stone, Bridge of Birds, et al.

I also recommend "Shogun" by James Clavell. An excellent read; it was made into a TV miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain years ago. But the book is best.

Anyone writing about the Samurai culture MUST read:
"A Book of Five Rings" (Go Rin No Sho) by Miyamoto Musashi

For another Asian (Chinese) perspective, a good book is Sun Tzu's "The Art of War."

You would be well advised to research Japanese Zen Buddhism, which is a strong influence on the culture.

Frank Miller's "Ronin"

Steve Perry's "The Man Who Never Missed" series. They're all based on action and the martial arts. Steve Perry is also a practitioner of martial arts.

Try THE SAMURAI by Shusaku Endo. There's a fine translation in English from Aventura books. It's a novel set back in the early 17th century.

And how about GENJI by Lady somethingorother? She was a member of the Japanese court a century or so ago. There are several good English translations.

And go watch loads of good kung fu movies. The multi-part tv series produced in Hong Kong by the Shaw Brothers were some of the finest. Talk about fantasy! Geez!! They had stuff we never get over here these days. A village trying to hide by driving everyone else out with ghosts. Oh, gee, I can't remember all the details, but I used to rent them from the little video store on the corner when I lived in China (Taiwan). And one of my Japanese classmates and I used to trade. She'd rent Japanese fantasy movies and I rent these Shaw Brothers and we'd swap.

I remember one about a sort of Christian vampire who was getting revenge on the emperor and another about a woman who was the sole survivor of her clan and she studied this outre kung fu and did all sort of weird things. I wish I could recall more details but it's been twenty years since I watched these shows. There MUST be some way to find them here in the states.

If you want a fun martial arts movie that gives you an overview of several kinds of Chinese as well as Japanese martial arts, I'd recommend SHAOLIN VERSUS NINJA (also known as HEROES OF THE EAST).
