Anyone have any fact-based information or inside experience with how the down economy is affecting publishing? I'd guess most houses are reducing acquisitions overall, and spending what they spend on established sellers, but it would just be a guess. Anyone know for sure?

Reorganizations are ongoing at many of the big six publishers, conflation of lines, layoffs, reductions in benefits, pension freezes. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt editors have been asked to stop acquisition of new books. Publisher's Weekly has a few articles on what's going on across the industry. Elsewhere, suggested search keywords, publishing acquisition hold. Poets and Writers, pw.org, is another source of news related to the economic pinch publishers are feeling.

I wonder how it's affecting agents. I mean us "Writers" have day jobs and can get by on no sales...we've been doing it for years! But if I were a full time lit agent... what would I do in the face of a freeze?
