I need a Jewish name that would belong to a sinful person. Maybe even the Jewish word for not believing in God. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Apikoros is a little-known Yiddish word for nonbeliever, atheist, skeptic. Other hypernyms of nonbeliever in English, gentile, philistine, pagan, paynim, infidel, apostate, heathen.

Don't know if this is the sort of thing you're looking for, but a lot of the baby name websites break down their names by ethnicity. www.babynames.com has an advanced search function so you call pull up all the Hebrew names and/or search by meaning.

What a fun request. My favorite Biblical sinner was Absalom, one of King David's sons. Tragic, violent story. Ironically, the name means "Father of Peace." Gotta love my Character Naming Sourcebook, the most helpful writer's resource I've discovered, besides Hatrack critiquers, of course.

The book doesn't list a name in regard to not believing in God, however. But there are a few more Hebrew names with negative connotations:

Bela = destruction
Benoni = son of my sorrows
Gedeon, Gideon = destroyer
Gersham, Gershom = exiled
Zared, Zarad = ambush

I assume you're looking for a male name? If you're wanting a female name, the book lists:

Avera = trangresses
Zilla, Zillah = shadow
Sarai = argumentative
Miriam, Mariamne = rebellious

Also, I'll bet you can google a Hebrew-English dictionary and type in "unbelief" or whatever, and get the word/name you really want? Hope this helps.

Cheers!
