With everyone starting to blog, somebody who know how to do it ought to create a Hatrack Writers Web Ring.

Enable RSS feeds on your site, and it's easy to compile a list of blog posts on a single webpage. All that's needed is a couple URLs and an XML stylesheet.

Rhaythe, that doesn't look easy to some of us. What is an XML stylesheet and how does it relate to an RSS feed?

A web ring is a collection of websites, sharing a theme, that are linked in a circle. Each site in the ring displays a navigation panel with a link to the next site and a link to the previous site. By going to the next site, a person would end up back where they started after visiting every website in the ring.

They're not popular as they were ten years ago. Maybe it's because they're a hassle to set up?

They're a hassle, and they're not very user friendly. I would bet trackback pings killed them off, as sites can now dynamically track and link other sites that link to them. There's no longer a need for a formalized group to drive traffic to a website.

Well it doesn't necessarily have to be a "web ring" but I have no problem with anything involving networking.

Is that the same thing as the "My Friends' Blogs" section I see on the right side of every blog that has a list of links to other blogs?

Web rings (at least, the few I was involved with and/or visited back in the early days) were always a mess because, once set up, and once some of the participating web sites fell by the wayside, nobody stepped up to maintain the ring the way it should have been.

My alternative idea was to simply add a few links to my blog that would lead to other writing-esque blogs. I don't use one of the commercial blog sites that amny of you use, but I built my own. Yeah, I'm a geek. That way, if I want a particular feature, I can build it whenever I want instead of waiting for somebody else. Recently, I decided it would be a good idea to include links to my fellow Hatracker's blog sites; of course, if they wish to add a link to Bloggathah on their blog, I would be very happy. Now, I won't guarantee I'll discover broken links or decommissioned blogs any faster than a web ring 'administrator' did (or didn't ), but I do work in cyberspace for a living, so peering over at my own site on a regular basis is not that big of a stretch for me.

Plus...keeping my fellow Hatracker's blog links in one place makes it easy for me to keep track of how everyone is doing.

Crank, I added a link to your blog on mine, Shadows in Mind. I also linked to the blogs of Heidi, Meredith, Merlion-Emrys, and Ryan Edward. You five, please let me know that's fine with you.

Would anyone else like to exchange links? I already had links for Eric James Stone, honuio, Jamie Ford, and tchernabyelo on my blog.

@ aspirit
Thanx! A link to your blog will go on mine when I make my next bulk update.

If anyone else puts my blog link on their site, let me know per favore, so I can return the kindness.

Fine with me. I've already linked to yours. Merlion, it's really easy with another Wordpress blog. If you're logged in, there's a menu bar at the top. The last entry "Blog Info" has an option to "Add to Blog Roll". Click and it's done.

I'll get to the other websites this weekend, hopefully, including yours, Crank. But Wordpress blogs are just easy.

I don't have my blog right where I want it yet so I'm not sharing the address just yet. Soon, though. Once I do I'll add a Hatracker section to it.

Is there a thread or place somewhere on this site that lists all the hatrackers blogs/ websites? I know we can go through and check people's profiles and people have posted the websites, but just one massive list would be more convenient and useful. If there isn't, we could start a thread and ask everyone to list their websites there. Not as sophisticated as the webring, but it could still be useful.

The most recent blog list thread was the one started by kdw in 2008:
http://www.hatrack.com/forums/writers/forum/Forum1/HTML/004905.html

It links to historical posts on blogs, which I like.

My website is in development, so I do not currently have a blog, however I utilize my 'notes' section of my professional writing/acting facebook page as my blog...though I havent actually blogged much there.

I would love for any Hatrackers not already friended on FB to add themselves.

Shameless plug: You can see me in the pics/screen caps and me in the trailer for the new Hilary Swank movie coming out in September titled BETTY ANNE WATERS

Over in the introduce yourself section I've added a thread for people to list their blogs and I'll edit my original post to include them. I think that's the closest we're gonna get using this infrastructure.
