...I'll be making my first submission... I hope. LOL

Remember awhile back that I posted about getting off the merry-go-round? I'm sure you all know the one I'm talking about. The one where you feel you're ready for some feedback on your story, get excellent advice, do a rewrite, and then ask for another crit... over and over again? Yeah, that one.

Well, I just had to get one more crit, a very special one. About a year or so ago, I discovered that the company I work for has a publishing house right in the building I've worked for for over 30 years. I guess I'm a little slow on the uptake sometimes. LOL I've made friends with one of the aquisitions editors. York evaluated the first three chapters of a book I wrote. This was before I found Hatrack and began expanding my writing education. He said, yes, I could write and to go for it.

Then I started work on my novella with hopes of submitting it to the WOTF. He critted my final draft and offered some advice. So I'm now in the process of making one more draft. After I finish this one, no more crits. I'm going to submit it. This might not sound like much to some folks, but it's a major milestone for me regardless of what happens once it's sent.

I hope you don't mind me posting this, but I just had to share. After all, many of you right here on Hatrack has made it all possible.

Thank you.

Congrats! I just submitted my first story a few weeks ago (already got rejected). It is kind of scary, but also kind of fun. Submitting made me feel like I was actually trying to fulfill the writer dream, instead of just daydream about it.

I know what you mean, Crystal. I'm still riding that merry-go-round. I've been away from the forum for a while doing the real-world bit (still wrote almost daily though), but I'm back in the game and looking to submit some stuff to F & F as well as do a couple of crits. Hopefully sometime in the near future, I'll be able to follow you in that unknown world (for me anyway) of submission.

Congrats on this huge step. Good luck!!

Unless I'm miscounting or have missed an entry, the time between the "official" start date of my writing career, and the date I mailed in my first submission, was forty-four days. I'm not saying it was any good, mind you---in fact, it was awful---but somehow it didn't take me that long to send something in. Dust off something you've written that you like, think of a market for it, and send it off.

<You guys are on a merry go round? I thought this was a roller coaster!

I can see the roller coaster analogy, but I think the merry-go-round is a more apt description... going round and round with no way to get off and head for a more defined destination. A merry-go-round goes up and down too just like the highs and lows we hit in our writing. One part of our story just flows in the writing while it seems like we work forever before the next works as well. Hmmm, I guess a roller coaster analogy does work similarly, doesn't it? Oh well. <<shrugs>>

Wonder if we should put a roller coaster and a merry-go-round near the treehouse.
