I have a habit of sometimes writing in fragments. I like how it sounds - it seems to have more "punch" and effect when I tell it that way. (This isn't to say every second sentence in my story is a fragment. I think I counted around 10 fragmented sentences in a story of 2000 words)

Is this something I should be avoiding though? Should I be working hard to create complete sentences and try to get the effect without breaking them up?

The most dreaded answer: It Depends.

I use fragments in dialog, because that's how people really talk.

I use fragments in interior monologue, because that's how I, at least, think.

I will occasionally use a fragment for emphasis.

Otherwise, I try to avoid them.

It's a personal style thing. Some writers -- professionals included -- use fragments, and others don't. I wouldn't go overboard with them, but don't go changing your writing style just to suit your grammar check or what you think is expected. Write how you want to write.
