Did You Write? 05-30-11

There is that bothersome question again. many of us will hold off on opening some work in progress, knowing there is still a lot of time left in the week. Suddenly, one visits the board and comes to the shock that the week is already over and you have not yet written. this week. Don't let that be you. open some work during the week. Add something to it. Be able to post to this note that you did the job expected of you.

How much to write is unimportant. we love to use word count to show our progress, but if we are editing especially someone else's work, giving a critique, or world or character building, word counts might not be something to count. I have edited work and had little change in the word count when done. If you are working with a key scene and you find one word changes the meaning of the interchange, that can be big, even though it is one word. Word count does not matter.

We don't always write on stories. We write in other venues that counts as writing also. It could be poetry, blogging, article writing, technical writing, world and or character creation, and even E-mails can be writing if they are wordy and pertain to story or writing. Editing and critiquing is also writing. If you have to ask if it is writing, the answer is yes.

As for me. I just finished another pass on my Waxy story. It needs help but I have the basic plot created. I've checked into some work that I am aiming this to market it, and see I do have some plotting changes. I am still in the old format mode, though I am closer to my target. Editing through the story, I added two pages and 1085 words. I will let my writing partner have a glance, and then get back to editing it toward my target audience.

ON the story idea front. I posted tonight's story idea this morning. I have one more idea to post for our 31 ideas in 31 days. I can then learn my word and page count fo the month which I will report next week.
My compost pile still has 45 story ideas. I lost two ideas early in the week because I could not write them down fast enough to get a reminder of what the idea was. I hate it when that happens. One of them I know was going to be a really good one.

I got to work with my brother's new forge this weekend. It is not done, but good enough to heat and pound on metal. I started out just squaring a piece of Re-bar. I decided I was gong to make a hook to hang something on the wall so I narrowed the point. I bent the end over, and then decided we needed a coal rake, an angled bar to drag the coals around in the fire so I flattened the end. Much of the blacksmith theory I learned proved right. We immediately saw that the piece of metal worked great.
My nephew made his first set of tongs. with some adjustments, it works good. He needs more different shaped jaws on the tongs so he has a lot of work he will need to do.
I won't get much chance to pound metal as I don't get to go to my brother's house too often. I can see there is an awful lot I don't know about black smithing. A lot of it is in controlling the fire.

As to the question of the day,

I can honestly say,

YES I DID WRITE.

DID YOU WRITE?

That's really neat that you got to experiment with a forge. I imagine having practical experience will make a huge difference when you describe metalworking in your stories . I don't imagine many writers have actually done much of that beyond reading up on the methods.

As for myself, I continued on my new story. Slowed down a bit from last week, down to 7-10 pages a day. The plot is coming along nicely but I keep skipping ahead of my current chapters to add new material as it comes to me. I guess my goal for tomorrow will be finishing filling a couple chapters and getting the story more organized.

As to the pertinent question YES, I did write!

Yep. Still mostly revisions, but that counts, too.

Plus a couple of blog posts and some critiques.

I managed to get back on the revision wagon, only to drop out for a couple of days when I went back to work and was much too tired and busy from that to do much of anything else. But I jumped back on that horse and have managed something Saturday, Sunday, and today. Tomorrow's looking good, too.

Some, but not as much as I should: another 2,000 words on the WotF story.

Yeah, I wrote:

On that one story I'm working on. I should have more time to work on it now until I decide what else to work on.

I finished "Storm Born" --backed up twice and ready for a revision in a while.
I wrote some on New Mage.
Worked a little on the second revision of Bright Lights.

Various blog posts. some here

E-mail and posts for here plus crits.
